About the Author
Andrew Karmen has been a professor in the Sociology Department at John Jay College of Criminal Justice since 1978. He has taught courses on a wide range of subjects including general sociology, criminal justice, criminology, crime and justice in New York City, drug abuse, delinquency, social problems, race relations, research methods, statistics, and victimology. He has previously served as the coordinator of both the criminology and criminal justice undergraduate majors, the co-director of the master's program in criminal justice, and as a member of the doctoral faculty. Dr. Karmen has written journal articles and chapters in books on a number of subjects, including drug abuse, police use of deadly force, auto theft, providing defense attorneys to indigents, victims' rights, the victimization of women, and predictions about the plight of crime victims in the future. His investigation of why crime rates rise and fall, NEW YORK MURDER MYSTERY: THE TRUE STORY BEHIND THE CRIME CRASH OF THE 1990s, (NYU Press, paperback edition 2006) unearths statistical evidence that casts doubt on most of the widely held beliefs about the reasons for the dramatic improvement in public safety in New York City. In 2012, Dr. Karmen was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the World Society Of Victimology.

Masterly Treatment of a Fascinating Subject

I first noticed this book on my university library bookshelf as an undergraduate over two decades ago. As a student of the ancient world, I had always been interested in the natural distribution of trees and forests in the ancient Mediterranean world and in the use of these trees by the ancients, and Russell Meiggs's book offered an in-depth study of this rather obscure subject. Having recently made time finally to read "Trees and Timber in the Ancient Mediterranean World," I can offer only the highest praise of Meiggs's book.
As a fellow of Balliol College, Oxford, and University Lecturer in Ancient History, Meiggs is exceptionally well-versed in the Greek and Latin (as well as translated Hebrew, Assyrian, Aramaic, and Persian) literary sources, epigraphic and archaeological evidence, medieval and modern travelogues, and more recent scientific techniques such as dendrochronology and pollen analysis. The book was published in 1982 (after Meiggs had retired from full-time teaching) and so lacks more advanced scientific methods such as DNA analysis or computer-assisted modelling, but Meiggs's thorough knowledge of the ancient Greek and Latin sources in all their extant forms more than makes up for this. For the study of trees and timber the most important Greek writer is Theophrastus (371-287 B.C.), Aristotle's heir as head of the Athenian Lyceum and the "father of botany." The principal Latin writer on ancient trees and timber is Pliny the Elder (A.D. 23-79).
Although some scholars have hypothesized that the climate of the ancient Mediterranean basin was colder and wetter than it is presently and that therefore there were more trees more widely distributed than now, Meiggs cites evidence that the ancient climate and distribution of trees and forests were basically the same as that of the present Mediterranean.
The best sources for the tallest trees were the cedars and junipers of Lebanon, of the Amanus range behind Tarsus and Antioch, and of the Taurus Mountains behind Cilicia. Though there were also cedars on Cyprus (which the Ptolemies of Egypt exploited for their ship-building when the cedars of Lebanon, Amanus, and Taurus came under the control of the Seleucids), as well as some cedars in the Atlas and Aures mountains of the southwest Mediterranean (in the provinces of Mauretania and Africa) to which the Romans eventually gained access. In addition to their great size, cedar and cypress both had a pleasant scent and resisted insects and decay, and were thus highly prized for building.
The cypress trees of Crete, Lycia, and Mount Ida (in ancient Troas) provided a convenient source of large timbers to the neighboring Greek regions of the Aegean, and the main roof-beam of the Parthenon was a large cypress from Crete. Lycia and Caria also had impressive junipers
According to Theophrastus, the best trees for shipbuilding were the tall silver firs of Macedonia, followed by the firs of the forests behind Sinope on the south coast of the Black Sea, and then by the considerably less desirable pines of Parnassus and Euboea.
Italy was more fully forested than mainland Greece, with some of the most impressive trees the tall firs of the Sila Forest in Calabria in the far southwest. (In the late 6th c. A.D., Pope Gregory the Great specially sent to the Sila Forest for firs long enough to repair the basilicas of St. Peter and St. Paul in Rome.) The Apennine Mountains along the spine of the Italian peninsula were rich in all manner of conifers, and deciduous trees such as elm, chesnut, and oak, and the Tiber basin and its tributaries provided a convenient mode of transporting harvested trees to Rome for both building and fuel. As the Roman Empire expanded, the impressive trees of Corsica and the mountains of Northwest Africa fell under its sway, as did the immense forests of Gaul, Germania, and Britain. Emperor Tiberius brought a massive larch tree from the Alps to repair a burnt-out bridge in Rome. Alpine larch, first encountered by Julius Caesar on a campaign, had a reputation for being semi-resistant to fire.
Throughout "Trees and Timber in the Ancient Mediterranean World" Meiggs is able to draw-out fascinating evidence for the types and sizes of trees used in such varied structures as Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem, Assyrian palaces in northern Mesopotamia, Demetrius I's massive siege engine "Helepolis" employed against Rhodes, and Trajan's bridge across the Danube into Dacia. Meiggs also covers woods often used for furniture (box, citrus, ebony), doors (cypress), and door frames (elm) among others. Broad-leaf deciduous trees such as chesnut and oak were best for coppicing (the practice of cutting trees down to stumps and allowing new shoots to grow, mature, and eventually be harvested themselves) for stakes, posts, fencing, and firewood.
With chapter titles such as "Forests and Fleets," "Timber for Armies," "Farms, Parks, and Gardens," and "Woods for Sculpture," Meiggs covers all aspects of the distribution and use of trees and timber in the ancient Mediterranean world. His last chapter is titled "Deforestation" and, as a previous reviewer has noted, Meiggs shows that the majority of the Mediterranean basin was well-forested (as in the ancient world) until the late nineteenth century when modern industrial logging thoroughly denuded the still-impressive forests of southern Italy, the Aures Mountains of Algeria and Tunisia, the Taurus range along the southern coast of Turkey, Crete, and Cyprus. The greatly expanding European population levels of this time also exacerbated deforestation as woodlands were cleared to make way for farms and pastures for sheep and goats. This last chapter is fascinating if also depressing.
After the thirteen main chapters Meiggs also includes nine appendices with titles such as "Confusion of Species: Cedar and Juniper; Chesnut and Walnut," "The Forests of South Italy," and "Pitch." Interspersed throughout the book are also helpful illustrations such as cross-sections of the Parthenon's roof and the 4th c. A.D. St. Peter's basilica (which utilized a huge quantity of timber in its construction), and examples of tie-beam trusses, the structural innovation that allowed the later Romans to span the main halls of their basilicas with roofs up to eighty feet wide. There are also clear maps of the various regions of the Mediterranean discussed in the text.

BACK WITH A BARK

What happened to the Cedars of Lebanon? Long out of print, and now priced not to move, Meiggs' "Trees and Timber" is virtually the only book about deforestation in the cradle of western history. Thankfully, it is also a memorable read. Meiggs fingers a surprising villain: the nineteenth century. Most historic stands of trees survived quite nicely until then, simply because they were inaccessible. Railroads doomed much that was green. Calabrian peasants sold their entire forest patrimony to large German companies that cleared everything to the last twig. Then their goats moved in, munching every new shoot and blocking reforestation--to this day. And the famous cedars? The only stand of significance is protected by Maronite Christian monks; otherwise, forget them too. Anyone concerned about deforestation must read this book.

A Rare Find

This book is MARVELOUS! It is almost the only book on Ancient Tree usage, it is the only one I know of, but his bibliography gives a few books that I've not seen nor read. THis book covers all the ancient Mediterranean world, from Lebannon to Cyprus to Greece. He actually wrote this book over a span of nearly 40 or so years, so it is very well written. Obviously not the sort of book that everyone may think is interesting, but it is and it is because Mr. Meiggs is a very good writer as well as scholar. If you can get ahold of this book it is worth the read.

So Glad I Found This Series

My efforts to reteach myself to play the piano had kind of stalled but ALFRED'S BASIC ADULT PIANO COURSE has put me back in gear. I kind of dithered between starting with level 2 or level 3 and though the first few pieces in level 2 were very easy for me I soon found I really did need the review offered in level 2 and a quick scan of level 3 shows me I would have soon become frustrated with it without going through this book first. A tuneful selection of folk, jazz ragtime and classical music make up most of the coursework and there is a lot of emphasis on chords and fingering - skills I missed in my piano lesson days of long ago. The book is bound with a sturdy plastic "comb" good for me as I am notoriously hard on piano music. There are pen and paper exercises to review notes and chords as well as lots of beautiful music pieces. If you are faithful in practicing this series will teach you a great deal about the piano and keep you motivated to continue.

Excellent series of books

See my review of the Level One book. This series of adult books is excellent and is very reasonably priced. I can't say enough good about the books. Some folks complain that the music used in these texts is not classical. Well, for me, classical music was what drove me away from the piano in the first place when I was a young kid. I wanted to learn to play the popular music I was hearing on the radio. Now as a senior I can chose my own music: classical, popular, rock, jazz, spiritual, and more. I'm learning to play the piano and that is a huge thrill for me. Evenings I study the book, figure out the count and mark the drill and practice pieces with it, and make notations on the music where I feel the need, then the next afternoon, I sit down at the piano and practice. It feels wonderfully gratifying to make music myself again.

My teacher fell in love with this book series.

Let me start by saying that I am a 24 years old and a really young piano student (barely 4months as I am writing this review).

A friend brought me the first book of Afred's series as a gift when he came back from UK while I had already started working on another book with my teacher.

When I received the first book I showed it immediately to my teacher, she studied it for a few days and asked me to order the other books of the series, because we are going to work on them.

Now I am almost done with the first series (NOT Afred's series. Remember I was already working on another book until i received the first Afred's book) and I am studying Afred's first at the same time. I have to say that Afred's is way above my current one, because it has A LOT well-known songs, the transaction from one technique to another is smoother while making sure that you go from the easier techniques to the most difficult, it has exercises and explanations before you "go on stage" so you know what you are about to face.

Overall, 5/5 from me.

I was a professional artist/designer and can highly recommend this book for children

I have given this book to four different children ranging in ages from 5 to 10 and it has an instant effect of stimulating them to draw. The images are designed and stylized in a way that children can relate to compared to most books on how to draw animals. Mostly they have instructions with a lot of circles and then immediately superimpose an extremely realistic, complicated drawing that most children can't relate to.
I was a professional artist/designer and can highly recommend this book for children. It keeps them entranced for hours!

If looking for direction, skip this one. Just want ideas? Get it. :)

Was alright. Some of the animals in here are just a head. There was also a zebra that was just it's back end?

I guess I was also expecting some sort of direction. But I guess it did give me some ideas. Artwork is very simple and cute. Works well if you like to trace or eyeball things. :)

Only for show . . . there is no tell

The title led me to believe there would be some guidance on sketching these creatures since it stated "draw 500 awesome animals", however, it is simply a collection of someone's renderings. No text. No way to determine how to draw these. If the title had stated, "here are pictures that I drew", I wouldn't have been disappointed.

There's not a lot of good books on the subject

I studied animation and consider myself an intermediate character designer. There's not a lot of good books on the subject, and this one is the best I've found yet. Although I myself could push the examples a little bit further, there's a lot of good information inside. I guess a beginner could learn most of the trades here, and an intermediate can learn/remember a lot of good tips also.

For anyone who wants to learn about character design from the drawing characters to using photoshop to draw and paint. Kevin Crossley has done a great job of giving real life work examples to creating some of his own. The artwork is very incredible and his humor is quite entertaining.

This seems to be the best character design book out there. Good examples, but not a great deal of variety. Very Sci-fi, not too cartoony. Great Photoshop technique instruction. Good design strategies. An example of a complete character design including thumbnails, construction and action model sheets, with turnarounds and character lineup would be welcome.

About the Author

Redwood Kardon, who devised and wrote the first Code Check, is a former electrician and building inspector for the city of Oakland, CA. Coauthor Douglas Hansen is a general contractor and certified combination inspector with over 30 years of field experience. Both authors present seminars and classes nationwide on a wide variety of building topics. Useful but beware

I use these Code Checks constantly as a quick easy reference to navigate through the numerous, often confusing and misleading, codes. But it's important that a contractor or homeowner know that they are using the latest or applicable code version. I find it sad that the author does not tell you on the cover or in the description, which version of each code this book covers so I will provide that information here.

I also think the publisher should sell updated sections when that appropriate code is updated. I have contacted them and they do not offer updates so you may be better off buying the individual Code Check books and replacing each when the new code is out.

it is not complete as the title suggests

It is a good book but, it frequently refers you back to the main code check book for the service you are working on e.g. in plumbing it will refer you to the code check plumbing book for complete information. had I to do over again I would buy the individual books.

Handy All-in-One Reference on Residential Building Codes

This is a handy composite easy-to-use reference book of the four major building codes covering building, electrical, plumbing and HVAC. It is for residential buildings.

Previously, the Code Check series was (and still is) issued for each of the individual codes noted above. This guide combines all four into a condensed and smaller spiral bound hard cover book. It is easier to carry and use if you need to take a quick peek at more than one of the various building code references.

It is an easy guide for contractors, home inspectors, and others interested in the current rules and regulations as they pertain on a national basis. It is not meant as a substitute for your local code regs however.

I believe both formats have a use and am glad they came out with this newer composite or complete version of all residential codes into one small book.

An individual contractor or tradesperson might appreciate the individual CODE CHECK flip chart style guide better. As they cover one of the 4 various building codes, they are slightly larger and much more durable than the composite book. They are published on damage-resistant plastic coated card stock and impervious to moisture damage. They are also larger, yet thinner and are quicker to use as they flip open with their sections all summarized on the cover.

The composite book is smaller, yet thicker. While it is also spiral bound, the paper it is printed on is not tear or moisture-resistant. The value for the composite is superior in that it provides most, if not all of the same information as the individual Code Checks. It is also much less expensive buying the composite compared to buying the four code checks separately. The pages are smaller and more difficult to read if one relies upon glasses in order to read.

The other glaring detraction is the information for the Electrical section. Perhaps the book came out a few months too early. Everything in the Building, HVAC, and Plumbing sections is up-to-date. The Electrical section still contains the information from the 2002/2005 National Electrical Code. Not the newest 2008 version. I would imagine however, that the next edition of the composite "Complete" Code Check book would contain the latest info. Many, if not most local jurisdictions tend to operate off the older NEC, so it may be of little consequence at this point anyway.

One other small observation, is that if you lend out your code check "complete", then you lend all of it out together. Unlike the individual publications. Also, it is not as durable, so if one does lend it out, it may not hold up in the long run, unlike the other larger plastic-coated booklets.

It is still a wise investment for the money. And a great way to have all the major code R&Rs in your hand for a quick and easy reference.

One other note, the publisher on their website also offers several downloads free of charge. One is the "California" Building Code. Another is changes or errors and ommissions in the Code Check Complete. It is after all in its first edition. However the mistakes are kept to a minimum.

When I purchased this book, I thought it was the AACN procedure manual. This book covers some of the same ground (a little out of date) but is not equivalent!

This book has been extremely helpful to me in the preparation of my master's thesis in materials science, physics. In no other text on dental materials have I found such concise, easy-to-read facts on restorative materials.
