About the Author

Fred Lutgens and Ed Tarbuck have been good friends and colleagues since 1970. Between them, they have more than 57 years of experience teaching geology to undergraduates, and both have been recognized with awards as excellent and inspiring professors. They share a special interest in introducing geology to beginning students and a belief in the value of field experiences for students of all levels.

Lutgens and Tarbuck published their first college text, Earth Science, in 1976. That book, winner of the McGuffy Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association, is now in its fourteenth edition. In 1983, as the first edition of Earth was being prepared, gifted geology illustrator Dennis Tasa joined the author team. Since then the three have collaborated on more than twenty projects. Not only do Tarbuck, Lutgens, and Tasa work well together creatively; they also enjoy spending time in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Tasa’s New Mexico studio.

Tarbuck enjoys downhill skiing in Colorado, fly fishing near his childhood home in Northern Minnesota, and spending time in the Cascades. Lutgens is an avid runner, and when he can make the time, truly enjoys hiking the canyons of the Colorado Plateau. Although Lutgens and Tarbuck think alike on many issues, they don’t agree on everything. Lutgens is devoted to jazz and classical music, whereas Tarbuck prefers pop artists or a good country station.

About the Author

Michael Boyle is one of the foremost experts in the fields of strength and conditioning, functional training, and general fitness. He is known internationally for his pioneering work and is an in-demand speaker at strength and conditioning conferences and athletic training clinics around the world.

Because of his expertise in sport performance training, Boyle has coached elite athletes on teams such as the Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins, New England Revolution, and Boston Breakers as well as the U.S. women’s Olympic teams in soccer and ice hockey. In 2012, Boyle joined the Boston Red Sox coaching staff as a strength and conditioning consultant for the team, which later won the World Series. His client list over the years reads like a Who’s Who of athletic success, including retired American football defensive end Marcellus Wiley, 2012 Olympic judo gold medalist Kayla Harrison, and Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge.

Boyle was the head strength and conditioning coach at Boston University from 1984 to 1997. From 1990 to 2012 he was the strength and conditioning coach for men’s ice hockey at BU.

Boyle provides performance-enhancement training for athletes of all levels through his Boston-based gym, Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning, which has been named one of America's 10 Best Gyms by Men's Health magazine. Boyle’s range of experience includes training athletes from the middle school level to all-stars in most major professional sports.

Great book. Elevating the fitness industry.

Mike Boyle delivers! If you want to know what one of the brightest minds in the fitness industry is doing to get amazing results, then get this book. He doesn't hold anything back - you get the background info, the theory, the practical application, the programming and even access to exclusive videos on how to coach the exercises correctly. Pretty amazing deal for such a little bit of money.
I've been reading, watching and going to see Mike for over a decade. He is one of the few sources of legit info in our industry because he has been there, done that and is still doing it. He doesn't just train a few folks (or merely himself) and then spin a bunch of articles online to make himself famous. He is the real deal.
Also, I can't believe I'm the first to write a review! 15 years on Amazon and this is the first time:-).

Highly recommend

Tremendous edition! Boyle is THE authority on modern functional training for athletes of all ability levels. The second edition refines the first edition by including Boyle's years worth of additional training and testing of movements, principals, and progressions since the original Functional Training for Sports was published. That's what's so great about Boyle's publications: he seemingly holds nothing back. Rather than rely on theory, Boyle educates the reader on what programming principals and movements actually produce results and why. Highly recommend for coaches and athletes alike. You will not be disappointed, although you may find yourself rethinking your current programming.

Solid program design and philosophy from an expert in the field of functional training!

If you are a personal trainer, strength coach, general fitness enthusiast looking for a solid "cook book" and plan look no further. I have been reading and following Coach Boyle for over eight years and have always enjoyed his keep it simple philosophy that includes testing his methods and changing them when it isn't working. It's a pleasure to read how he assesses his athletes and uses this simple philosophy.

If you are looking for sound ideas that are tested and can help you build your training philosophy this is the book for you. Especially since this book covers many areas such as assessment, program design, speed training, dynamic warm ups. Everything is here to help you understand what Mike does in his facility.

Good - but misleading title

Who wouldn’t want the tool to solve business problems? The British-Mexican Antonio Weiss has a varied and interesting history. With an academic background as an historian of the state and religion he moved on to become a management consultant doing work for the UK public sector. Weiss’ basic thesis is that business leaders - like most people – often lack a method to solve problems. This book is meant to deliver a proven methodology to guide the reader successfully through the problem solving process. The subtitle is “Essential business-solving tools and techniques that every manager needs to know”. I like what Weiss has written but I also think the book misses its mark with regards to the thesis. It does not deliver problem-solving tools for managers; it delivers project management techniques for management consultants or project managers trying to deliver a recommendation to solve a business problem. Hence, the author delivers a McKinsey-BCG-Bain-type of process answer to a more broad and general topic. With that said the so-called OBTAIN-model is among the better descriptions of this type of process that I’ve read.

There are two parts to the book where the first by one chapter per letter describes the OBTAIN-project management process and the second part lists a number of business tools like the 4P’s of marketing, SWOT-analysis etc. In short the letters in OBTAIN stands for: Outline – frame the problem into a goal that you need to achieve; Break Down – separate the problem into manageable pieces that are easier to solve; Test –relatively early in the process a hypothetical solution should be developed and then this is tested, discarded or refined; Analyze – do the analysis to get to the root of the problem and verify your hypothesis; Imagine – come up with an innovative solution that is developed jointly with key stakeholders; Notify – have the right techniques to communicate the solution. In addition, there are the two steps (and chapters) on managing the stakeholders and managing the project team.

For each process step one or two useful tools (like for example the Hypothesis Tree or the Prioritization Matrix) are presented. I also liked the chapter on how to communicate the solution (not surprisingly with a McKinsey-Barbara Minto type of presentation structure). Part two of the book feels more like an appendix even though some of the tools, like De Bono’s Six Thinking Hats, perhaps can be said to be closer to the more generic theme of the subtitle.

When I come in contact with the early-hypothesis driven management consultant model I’m always reminded of a quotation from Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes that has become popular among investors ”The temptation to form premature theories upon insufficient data is the bane of our profession” – the point being that if you decide on a solution too early your research process will risk falling victim to confirmatory bias. On the other hand it is obviously equally true that more information has declining marginal utility and if you decide too late a lot of effort will have been a waste of time. The consultant leans towards an earlier decision than the investor with regards to this trade off.

Further, I get the nagging feeling that such a strict process focus as in the OBTAIN-model could come in the way of solutions that really changes the playing field. The focus is to come up with “the right” solution that can be accepted by all stakeholders. This type of solution will probably lead to satisfied paying customers, but I’m not sure it goes further than that.

If you work at a corporate strategy department or are an aspiring management consultant this is a very useful book to read.

About the Author
Sabrina Wilk is a landscape architect, born in Toronto. She specialized in visual representation, analogue and digital graphics in landscape design and has worked with many different landscape architecture offices in Germany, Canada and the UK. Since 2005, she is full-time Professor of Drawing and Visualization at the Faculty of Landscape Architecture, at the University of Applied Sciences Weihenstephan-Triesdorf. She has also held lectureships in graphics and design at the University of Greenwich and at University College Dublin. She founded the LineScape drawing initiative in 2007 to promote and foster drawing practise and techniques within the
landscape architectural professions.

Beautiful book! Excellent for a text book or gift to a landscape architect. Substantial content, ranges from across many topics. Very nicely bound- I love the elastic closure and bookmark feature. It seems very classic. I am a landscape architectural instructor, and I will give this to my husband and buy another to keep at work!

Excellent reference

If you are involved with thermal performance evaluations of boilers or steam generators you will find this book useful. I have never had a formal class on two-phase flow or boiling, but find this book very useful. Most recently I was using it to get a better understanding of homogenous flow, separated flow and drift flux models. Highly recommended.

A renewed fundamental book

Possibly the single problem with the original version of "Convective Boiling and Condensation" by J.G. Collier was that it was getting too old. After the update made in the last versions with the work by J.R. Thome, the book has been renewed recovering the role of a fundamental textbook to be considered for both teaching and research. It is full of the best explanations you can find about several basic heat transfer mechanisms and provides precious suggestions for further reading and more in depth study. A nice book indeed.

Titrate your own oils

The first time I cracked this book open, all of the technical information was lost on me. Then I started selling my soap, and I realized that if I wanted a product that wasn't superfatted, which I didn't (that unsaponified oil goes down the drain, after all), I would need to titrate my own oils. Otherwise my soaps could turn out lye heavy even running it through a lye calculator, which uses average SAP values, and following the recipe exactly.

Yes, I own just about every soap making book on the market today. No, none of them tell you how to titrate your oils. This book does. It also tells you how to measure properly, how to test your bars for various qualities, what to do to avoid the dreaded orange spots, and why it's a waste of time adding "superfatted" oils to your soap last.

There is so much more in here but it is definitely for the chemistry lover. If you just want to make a bar of soap, you can do that with almost any soap making book. If you want to standardize your bars so that you know exactly what you are getting each and every time, this is the book you would buy.

Good for chemistry students and professional/experienced soap makers

Scientific Soapmaking is a book that takes soap very, very seriously. It's dense with information, but that information may not be exactly what you expect. While a lot of the book does indeed cover the underlying chemistry of soap and tackles some of the important issues soap makers face, a huge portion of the book is all about doing your own experiments. The entire first third of the book is teaching you how to make small (1-bar), highly accurate (measuring ingredients in grams to two decimals out), quick-turnaround (you're buying a roasting oven to speed things up) test runs.

This degrees of accuracy and reproducibility is such that I can only imagine a full-time professional being interested in jumping through these hoops to get there. The problem is that he doesn't gear the book just towards professionals, or even experienced soapmakers; he tries to bring beginners - who have never made a bar of soap, let alone used a lye calculator - up to speed. Beginners who have never made soap before should not be relying on this book to get them started: he asks you to make a substantial investment in equipment, chemicals, and time (leaning how to do things in very specific ways) when you don't even know you're going to like the hobby or stick with it. He should have started with the assumption that anyone who would want to pick up this book has made soap already. The book grinds to a halt every time he starts talking about why you have to mix oils for the best results or what a slab mold is. Everyone who has read another soap book knows what coconut oil brings to the party, how to use an online lye calculator, and they've probably made their own castile at some point, so stepping slowly through these issues like you don't know a thing about them becomes tedious.

I suppose he's trying to be inclusive of beginners to make the book suitable for students in a chemistry class. Not only does he guide you through a bunch of experiments, a lot of them aren't even soap-related. The first part of the book leads you into soap chemistry by asking you to perform a whole series of experiments with acids, bases, alcohols, and more. There are also "Practice Problems" at the end of the chapters. I skipped all this and decided to just take his word on the fact that Xg of acid would neutralize Yg of alkalines. I'm a hobbyist soap-maker and I do this for fun: I didn't want to run my own experiments, I just wanted to know the results of his.

All this chemistry talk does eventually lead into what I was really after: namely, what happens when lye meets oils. And I was excited when a couple of big, fat light bulbs went off over my head. I learned about rancid oils, what happens during the curing process, and why Castor oil behaves differently than everything else. Once I slogged my way through a bunch of skippable math instruction and background info, things got much more informative.

Finally, the very back of the book is where he answers the questions a soap maker is really after. Soda ash, DOS, lye discounting vs superfatting, water discounting, temperature changes, and more have been tested and laid out in charts.

My final verdict? Professionals should probably own this book, and hobbyists would benefit by reading through it at least once. There's some very good information in the pages, but an average soap maker can skim half the chapters, skip the experiments, and ignore the instructive problems. I suppose this book is also written for classroom instruction, but the very things that make it a good introductory textbook make it a slow, frustrating book for soapers. Still, I'm a soaping hobbyist myself and I'm glad I bought the book.

Great resource for handcrafted soapmakers

"Scientific Soapmaking" stands out from many books on the market geared towards cold-process handcrafted soapmakers that are filled with recipes, instructions, and guides. In this book, Kevin combines his extensive knowledge of chemistry and soapmaking with practical advice to lay the foundation for systematic exploration into the world of saponification.

The book starts with basic protocols on weighing, chemical handling, and supplies for your soapmaking lab. And then follows with in-depth information on oils and their structures, acid and bases, saponification stoichiometry, and analytical techniques to test your starting materials and soap. These are all tools for you to bring into play when addressing an issue in the soap pot, formulating a recipe with new oils or additives, or troubleshooting finished soap issues.

The last section, research and development, leads you through five research projects conducted by Dr. Dunn and his students at Hampden-Sydney College to answer long-standing questions asked in the cold-process handcrafted soap community: causes of the dreaded orange spot, effect of time and temperature on saponification, effects of lye and water discounts, and factors that affect trace. This last section is what makes this book so unique and valuable for a cold-process handcrafted soapmaker - the problem is defined, a scientific approach is composed, tests are run, and the data is analyzed and discussed.

"Scientific Soapmaking" fills a knowledge gap for the cold-process handcrafted soap community and I recommend it as a great resource for all handcrafted soapmakers.

Walking the Path Alongside a Truly Exceptional Woman

I have to say, this book was FAR more engaging than I had ever hoped for. I can easily say I loved every page and found myself thinking about it often during the day when I'd put it down. I'm a long-time fan of Ms. Streep, but the book is not just a great account of her life and development, it does a terrific job of bringing to life an entire era of AMerican social, political and dramatic revolution. The details are both funny and yet often intimate; you gain insight into the actress yes, but as well all of the "cast" of people who have been around her. So fans of recent history will be as rewarded as fans of Meryl Streep.

What stands out the most to me is just how much Ms. Streep worked to bring her amazing gifts to life, never taking anything for granted, never settling.

The review that claims the book is shallow seems crazy to me, and if in reality a lot of the material is technically "out there" already, well so what? So is almost every historic personage too. It's how it's woven together and what is chosen that is what counts. ANd to think even the most determined fan could ever track it all down on their own, let alone put it together in such a coherent narrative is borderline insulting the book's author.

Greatest Living Actress

The book encompasses the early life of Meryl Streep, from her high school cheerleading days, early acting studies, to stage and finally movie stardom. The book concludes with her first Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress in "Kramer versus Kramer". I was a bit disappointed that the book stopped there. I am interested in the 30+ years in her acting career after that Oscar win. I would recommend the book to anyone interested in how Meryl began her career and those interested in some of the more technical aspects of working in theater.
