The end to a new beginning. ...

Wow, what a way to end a series. I'm going to miss these two dirty-talking, sexy-as-hell football players.
Play Hardest starts where Play Harder left us hanging. Sooooo worth the wait! The love they have for the game and for each other is so beautiful. There were some twist and turns that I didn't see coming. I held my breath for some of them.
In the end, everything they had to go through was worth the fight. Maybe we can get another book to see what happens...say a few years from now? Hehe. Can't wait to see what J.T. Fox comes up with next

Play Hardest is the third and final installment in the Hot for Him series from J.T. Fox. This installment picks up after the events of the first two books and needs to be read in order as it is the continuation of Jordan and Eric's story. After how the last installment ended, I couldn't wait to get more of these two. I needed to know what happened, and I enjoyed seeing more of these two sexy guys.

Jordan and Eric have been trying to figure out who is blackmailing them, but so far they have been unable to. At the end of Play Harder, it appeared that the blackmailer had escalated things when Eric's helmet was tampered with and he wound up in the hospital. Though Jordan and Eric didn't want to go public and fought their feelings for one another, Jordan knew he would do whatever it took to get to the bottom of who was behind the blackmail. But will they be able to catch the person responsible and find a way to have successful careers if the truth about them is revealed?

I was really torn about how to feel after the ending of the last installment. I really enjoyed the heat and chemistry between these two and was glad to see them finally exploring that. But I was also very frustrated with Jordan's actions. I really loved how he made up for that here though, and it was good to see these two finally working towards a future together. They seemed to really be on the same page and I was glad that they were able to see what was really important here. Their chemistry was never in question, but I will admit that their connection was a bit of a harder sell for me. While it was clear that these two were developing something, I felt like it was a bit too insta-love for me to really believe in the intensity of their feelings at that stage. Not that I didn't believe it would get there, I just didn't think that it was possible for these two to really be in love with how hot and cold they had both been running. There was so much running and push and pull, that we didn't really get to see them actually together for any length of time before they were full steam ahead.

Overall, this was a good sexy series and I enjoyed Jordan and Eric's story. I do think that things felt a bit rushed here, and I would have liked to have seen more of Jordan and Eric together. I think had we experienced this as one novel rather than three short installments, it might have seemed a bit more cohesive and possibly more realistic. But I really just wanted to see more development and emotional connection between Jordan and Eric and I don't feel like we ever fully got that. If you like short and sexy M/M stories and hot football players, I recommend giving this series a shot. Jordan and Eric were very steamy together and I liked their characters a lot.

An conclusion you never saw coming . . . .

This is the Final in the Hot for Him series, and is by far my favorite!

Play Hardest picks up right where Play Harder left off. Sitting in the waiting room of the hospital waiting for the answers to Eric's injuries.

With the fear of the unknown with Eric's health, Jordan is finally ready to admit to himself that Eric holds his heart and stop being so scared of a HEA.

Jordan knows that no matter what happens from here on out, he wants Eric by his side and will do whatever it takes to keep him safe. Even if that means coming out to world that he is gay.

With the blackmailers threats still hanging over their heads, Jordan seeks the one person he never thought he'd be calling, Private Investigator Kyle, his ex, to hep find out who is responsible for what happened to Eric.

The ending . . . . Holy #fuck! I did not see that one coming!

All in all, this was a great little series. If you love M/M and love football, this one is perfect for you. Sadly, some of the football talk got lost on me as I don't follow the sport, but it wasn't a major deal.

J.T. Fox has done an amazing job with these men, I can't wait to see what he has in-store for us next.

Spoiled from birth by her father and three older brothers (and somewhat less by her mother) and homeschooled until she was in third grade, Queen has no idea how to relate to her fifth-grade classmates. She doesn't seem able to keep her mouth shut and often treats them with scorn. When a new boy, Leroy, appears in class—smelly, ill-dressed, and claiming he is from Africa—Queen is sure he is lying and becomes determined to prove it. Following him, she discovers that he is running errands for a neighbor, an actor who has developed agoraphobia. Queen bullies Leroy into telling her about Cornelius and tries to talk her way into his apartment. Her high-and-mighty attitude doesn't work with the man—he insists that she solve a complicated riddle and act decently before he will speak with her. So begins Queen's slow and bumpy realization that being pleasant will smooth her relationships with others. She eventually gains entrance into Cornelius's apartment and discovers all the memorabilia he has collected over a lifetime of world travel. And she finds a real friend in Leroy. Flake has created a character who is difficult and unlikable but at the same time sympathetic. not just a girl book. a good read

I read this one with my 5th grade son and this was actually a good book for boys too. I was kind of hesitant at first after looking at the cover with the girl but there are some really good points made in this story like not judging people by appearance. I love the way the author shows us how the relationship between the princess and the boy grows from one of dislike to something really special. You should get this book if you want to help your kids understand that even though some of us have more than others, we are all the same and we should always try to help each other.

Queen is an incredibly stuck up ten-year-old girl whose family's praise has given her a very high opinion of herself. Her father and older brothers have spoiled her to the point where she's very, very easy to dislike. Unsurprisingly, no one at school seems to appreciate or recognize her supposed superiority.

Leroy is a new boy in her class, who smells funny and whose bike is broken. Queen is sure that he's a liar, especially when he tells stories about being royalty from Africa, and she can't stand him. Her parents try to force her to be nice to him, so they are thrown together despite Queen's dislike. Through Leroy, Queen learns some important lessons.

She's still not a very likeable heroine, though. I don't think I was supposed to like her. Be prepared for that going into this book, and you'll be able to appreciate Sharon G. Flake's amazing (and unsurprising if you've read her previous books) talent.

I'm not sure how kids will feel about this book. Some of them may not be willing to read a book with a main character like Queen. But if they can give it a shot, it's a pretty enjoyable short novel.

Queen for a day (give or take a decade)

I'm probably the laziest person I know when it comes to reviewing books. I'm okay on the reading part, and I'm just ducky at putting a book in my To Be Reviewed Pile. It's at the point when the book merges with the general pile that I tend to get distracted, though. Books get seriously frighteningly buried. I guess that's the danger with a vertical rather than a horizontal pile. Then the mediocre books begin to disappear from my mind. I forget their details and their characters. I can't conjure up a notable scene or moment from them, and then the end of the year rolls around and it's too late to review them anyway. Once in a great while, however, I'll bury a book deep down into my pile and it'll remain in my brain for months on end. Today's example of this is Sharon G. Flake's, "The Broken Bike Boy and the Queen of 33rd Street". I read this book so long ago that I've no clear-cut memory of the time or season anymore. Yet when I plucked it up just now it was if I'd finished it in its entirety only yesterday. Until this book the only Flake title I'd ever read was the mighty YA, Who Am I Without Him?. "Broken Bike Boy", then, proves that Flake's talent for switching genres is rivaled only by her strong characterizations.

It's enough to drive even the most superior member of the royal family bonkers. Queen knows that she's smart. Her father and her older brothers tell her every single day, and she loves correcting her teacher whenever she has the chance. That the kids in her school don't immediately recognize her innate superiority would be tolerable if they didn't all go and actually like nasty old Leroy instead. Leroy stinks and he lies. He says he's royalty from Africa, and Queen seems to be the only kid in her class that can see through his lies. Yet somehow this nasty boy has managed to charm everybody. Her teacher. Her parents. Her classmates. Everyone! But Queen's attempts to get at the truth behind Leroy's past teaches her a thing or two about what it truly means to be royal and, more importantly, a good person in this life.

At first when I was reading this book, I was ... well, basically I read this book like a kid would. I really did NOT like silly stuck-up Queen and I was feeling more than a little mad at Ms. Flake for forcing her upon me. I mean, this is a gal doted upon by her father and all her brothers. When one of them sends her a present she recounts how, "Then like always, he told me how much he loved me. Right after that I called my other brothers, to see what they would send me." ARG! Tell me that doesn't make you feel just a little crazy. Spoiled kids make for frustrating if intense reading. I'm ashamed to say that I was probably halfway through the book before it occurred to me that maybe you weren't supposed to like Queen. Maybe that was kind of the point. I've been so used to reading characters like Ida B from the novel of the same name that I had difficulty recognizing when I was supposed to be annoyed by my protagonist. Kudos to Ms. Flake then. It takes guts to make an unlikable hero. Guts and talent.

Pity about the end, really. Chapter 26 goes way too fast and ends the book with an abruptness that takes your breath away. Spoiler alert for those of you who'd rather not know the end. First of all, the villains are punks with pink hair. It's so retro it almost works. But then the action sequence starts and the herky-jerky writing throws everything off. For some reason, the style that serves the rest of the book so well goes wayward and odd here. Sentences are short and don't connect to one another in a pleasing fashion. Then the next thing you know you're at the end of the book and it's all happened so quickly that you don't know if you're coming or going.

Be all that as it may be, I'm a fan. The book sticks with you. Queen is so infuriating that it's nothing short of amazing that Flake is capable of making her sympathetic. The feeling of wanting to root for Queen even as you throttle her makes this book a standout in a fairly dull year. Ideal for booktalks, book discussion, and reading aloud in the classroom. Two thumbs up.

A fan's disapointment

I'm a big fan of this type of stuff.
But I feel that Kreisberg could be writing a way better story. This evil circus band has me completely uninterested in what's going on. This seems more like a kiddy cartoony comic based off of a kids show. I'm also, now, a little confused at when is this story supposed to take place? Is there supposed to be a long gap of time between episodes 1 and 2 or something? So far this would make a terrible episode and I believe execs would can it immediately in rough draft stage. Arrow's comic has me way more glued into the story and ampted up for season 3, this makes feel, gosh, I hope I don't have to sit through this kind of soap opera junk and corny plotlines when the show eventually airs. I just feel that a better story could have been chosen to bring publicity for the show. And I feel that this kind of episode would not air at all on this show, or the ratings would tank, so why chose this story to give us a glimpse of what episodes will be like? I'm just disappointed in this story and I feel the writer and artist could do more.

The series continues on as the mystery regarding the crimes from the previous issue. The villain's look in this issue is absolutely creepy and the final scene at the zoo makes for a nice cliffhanger.

Watch what you pay

This book, in it various revisions, is one of the most important works on the internal combustion engine written over the +100 years the engine type has been with us. It is excellently written and very accessible, and cannot be recommended enough.

A suggestion: Like me you may want to own an original, however the Ricardo engineering company (set up by the author) is retailing a re-print of the 5th edition for £35 on line. Please look at [...]->what we do->Information services->estore for details. The cover of the re-print looks identical to that shown on this Amazon page. The re-print is excellent (I bought one) and includes the large fold-out engine cross-section drawings so beloved of engineers.

Required reading for all piston-engine enthusiasts.

The High Speed Internal Combustion Engine by Sir Harry R. Ricardo, LL.D., F. R. S.
Sir Harry Ricardo was one of the most influential piston-engine researchers in Great Britain, and probably the world. His efforts resulted in the very advanced engines which powered Britain's aircraft during WW II, and have influenced engine design ever since. This book lucidly chronicles the fascinating highlights of Ricardo's achievements, and is utterly indespensible for anyone interested in appreciating the engineering fundamentals of piston-engine design and development.
Ricardo's early efforts in characterizing the detonation properties of fuels have given us our present-day octane ratings, and their measurement. His later research and development work, summarized in this book, resulted in engine designs considered to represent the most advanced aircraft engines made. He had even more ideas to try, but the rise of turbine engines put an end to the development of high-output piston engines for aircraft.
That this richly informative and historical book is out of print is highly regrettable. It is most definitely worth attempting to locate used, and will provide a wealth of insight and historical perspective. Highly recommended.
