About the Author
STREETWISE® is the first map to be designed with modern graphics and is the originator of the laminated, accordion-fold map format. We’ve set the standard that every map company has imitated but never duplicated. Our mission is to make you feel comfortable, to make you feel safe in a place where you’ve never been before and to enable you to experience a familiar place more fully.

The company was founded in 1984 by Michael Brown, who had been in international publishing for many years, setting up subsidiaries for textbook publishers. In the 1970’s, Brown traveled extensively throughout Africa, India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Brown would take a large paper map, cut out the city center, folded it up and slip it into his pocket, thus preventing him from looking like a tourist in areas where discretion is the better part of travel. This was his tool for surviving.

After many years on the road, Brown settled back in New York and decided to start his own business, based on the adaptations he had made to maps in his travels. His goal was to give someone the ability to navigate easily in unfamiliar terrain.

He started with a new map format: the accordion fold. Such a simple idea, but at the time it was revolutionary. No more struggling to fold an awkward, oversized paper map. This new format would enable the user to blend in like a native, instead of stick out like a tourist. Brown then added lamination to ensure that the map would be a lasting tool.

More important than the format was the design of the map itself. It had to be a map that not only succeeded above and beyond any map he had used, but was esthetically appealing as well. The look of it had to be as striking as the functionality. Color was introduced in a way that was never seen before in a map - vivid purple for water, soothing gray for the background of street grids, gold to highlight elements of the map. Clarity, conciseness and convenience in a very stylish package.

Building the business was a 24 hour job. Brown sold the maps during the day, zipping around Manhattan making deliveries on his Harley Davidson. At night he packed the orders and did the design work. More titles were added, each title requiring months of research and design.

Today, STREETWISE® produces over 130 titles for major destinations, regions and countries throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom and Asia. We have grown from the back of a motorcycle to selling millions of maps around the world.

Yet each title is still painstakingly researched and updated. STREETWISE® is one of the only, if not THE only map company that conducts research by walking or driving an area to ensure accuracy. Not really "Streetwise": no detailed map of Royal Mile and New Town

At a minimum, I thought the Streetwise Edinburgh map would have an enlarged map of the Royal Mile and New Town, as these areas have the great majority of tourist sights. Instead, these areas are just a tiny part of the largely unreadable map of central Edinburgh. Perversely, there is an enlarged detailed and easily legible map of Leith, but the Royal Yacht Britannia (Leith's big tourist attraction) barely makes it onto the edge of the map. Although laminated and all on one sheet, the addition of a map of the Firth of Forth area and a map of all of Scotland makes this unnecessarily bulky when folded. As another reviewer has commented, this revised version also does not show Edinburgh's not-so-new tram line. For a 3-day visit to Edinburgh proper, I have absolutely no use for a map of the entire country, or even the Firth of Forth, but I would have greatly appreciated a more detailed map of the city itself.

right size and scale

I find these Streetwise maps in general very useful. They have a lot of detail but not too much and are a good size not to be conspicuous, especially if you're the type that doesn't use a smartphone. I love Charleston and visit at every opportunity, which still isn't often enough to have downtown memorized. This map is just what I need. It has two different scale maps of the lower peninsula, and two different scale maps of the environs, which is useful for driving. Plus a small map of North Charleston near the airport.

There is one minor error on the maps of downtown. The church at the corner of Broad and Legare is the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, not as the 2012 edition reads, St. John the Divine.

Otherwise, nice map and great value for the price.

Walking Edinburgh...

"Streetwise Edinburgh" is a handy and updated (revised 2008) guide to walking Edinburgh, the fine capital of Scotland, and driving in its immediate environs. "Streetwise Edinburgh" is actually five maps contained on one laminated and folding sheet.

On one side, there is a 1:2,200,000 scale map of Scotland, showing the principal roads and geographic features and probably detailed enough for a general orientation. Second on this side is a 1:120,000 scale Edinburgh Area Map, showing the city from the A720 ring road to the Firth of Forth coast. The third map on this side is a 1:11,000 scale depiction of the Port of Leith and the immediate area near the shore, including the permanent home of the Royal Yacht Britannia. This rather crowded side include a directory to Edinburgh streets.

The flip side of the folded sheet has a 1:200,000 of the Edinburgh Region, including the city itself, the Lothians, and that area of Fife bordering the Firth of Forth. Perhaps most importantly, this side includes a 1:11,000 scale depiction of the Old Town, including the Castle, the Palace of Holyrood, and the adjacent Holyrood Park. This map include a good selection of the more prominent visitor attractions.

"Streetwise Edinburgh" is highly recomemmended to those planning to walk Edinburgh and explore the surrounding area by automobile.

Gender Politics in the Western Balkans traces the development of women's consciousness in the lands of the South Slavs from the early years of the twentieth century, on the eve of the creation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, to the situation during and after the Serbian Insurrectionary War of 1991–95. The book embraces historical chapters, contemporary political analyses, and cultural studies (focusing on literature and religion).

Socialist Yugoslavia undertook a relatively unusual experiment during the forty-six years of its existence (1945–91)—to eliminate the sources of social, economic, and gender inequality while laying the foundation for a society in which women and men could enjoy complete equality in politics, in education and careers, and in family life. Although the aspiration was shared with other communist countries, Yugoslavia gave its experiment a unique twist by linking its program with institutional changes to be realized through self-management organs and a complicated delegate system. The socialist system represented an improvement where gender equality was concerned over the pre-existing system associated with the interwar Kingdom of Yugoslavia, but it did not fulfill its promises.

Recognizing the need for a book that surveys the experience of South Slav women during the twentieth century, Sabrina Ramet commissioned essays from leading scholars in East European/Yugoslav studies and women’s studies for this volume. The resulting collection is arranged in rough chronological order, covering primarily Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, and Bosnia from before World War II until present day. Topics covered include the structures of traditional society, gender relations in the interwar period, anti-Fascist organizations, the socialist experience, and issues connected to post-socialist politics and the war, making this the most comprehensive and up-to-date book on the subject.

Much needed contribution to neglected topic

For the most part, the contributions in this collection are very informative and useful studies of various aspects of gender issues in the former Yugoslavia. If nothing else, it's refreshing to see a book that covers such a chronically under-studied topic. The first article on the `traditional' Yugoslav family by anthropologist Andrei Simic, although first published in 1983, was a good choice to head this selection of studies. His observations of some typical aspects of family relations and the gender roles therein provide a good basis for understanding other gender-related issues. Most of the other articles deal with a specific region or former Yugoslav republic (i.e. Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, etc.) Among the best is an article by Julie Mertus on women in Kosovo. She illustrates the many problems faced by Albanian women activists, particularly the deep and sometimes self-induced repression exercised by this extremely patriarchal society. The examples she cites from her fieldwork are very illuminating. Two articles by Gordana Crnkovic are particularly interesting, and too short in my opinion. Both deal with literature as this pertains to gender: the first covers mainly Serbian and Croatian women authors, while the second deals with the way women are portrayed in literature. The afterward by Branka Magaš is also helpful in that it ties together some of the common themes.

Great book on The C4, Not too technical or a Go To end all source,The photography is great and option information is good. I wish there would have been more Pictures and A Color Chart showing the different colors, There is Options discussed for each year and colors available for each year, The ZR-1 (1990-1995) should be Referred to As ZR-1 not ZR1(2009-),Also no Mention of There being 1983 Corvettes(Prototypes,Super Rare) and 1988-1989 Corvette Challenge cars,Other than that It is a Short but nonetheless great book.

More than I expected even though I have a lot of Corvette books! Excellent accuracy on specifications & facts.
Being a photographer I really enjoyed the great photography work & owning a C4 Corvette I could not recommend this book enough to anyone that likes Corvettes!

Winter's mother is shot in the face by competing drug dealers, the FBI arrest Santiaga and confiscate the family's possessions. Then, while visiting her father at Rikers Island, Winter discovers her father has a 22-year-old mistress and a baby boy. For the first time, Winter feels anger toward her father and pity for her fallen mother. Being the ruthless hood rat that she is, however, Winter leaves her weakened relatives behind and sets off to regain her stature and reinstate her father. The trials and tribulations of young Winter Santiaga are described in gritty detail in this coming-of-age novel, the first by the phenomenally popular rap star who frequently lectures on the themes of this novel: overcoming teenage pregnancy, fatherless households, and drug use in African American communities. As the oldest daughter of a successful drug dealer, Winter lacks for nothing. But after her father moves the family from the projects to a mansion on Long Island, Winters life begins to come apart. Her beautiful mother is shot, her father is sent to prison, and the familys possessions are seized by the government. Winter and her three sisters, Mercedes, Lexus, and Porsche, become wards of the state. Finally, arrested and convicted of transporting drugs in a boyfriends car, Winter receives a 15-year jail term. Sister Souljah herself appears as a character, urging Winter and other young black women to stand up to the men in their lives, abstain from drugs, and practice safe sex. Although the novels writing is amateurish, the message is sincere.

Debut novel by hip-hop rap artist Sister Souljah, whose No Disrespect (1994), which mixes sexual history with political diatribe, is popular in schools country-wide. In its way, this is a tour de force of black English and underworld slang, as finely tuned to its heroine's voice as Alice Walker's The Color Purple. The subject matter, though, has a certain flashiness, like a black Godfather family saga, and the heroine's eventual fall develops only glancingly from her character. Born to a 14-year-old mother during one of New York's worst snowstorms, Winter Santiaga is the teenaged daughter of Ricky Santiaga, Brooklyn's top drug dealer, who lives like an Arab prince and treats his wife and four daughters like a queen and her princesses. Winter lost her virginity at 12 and now focuses unwaveringly on varieties of adolescent self-indulgence: sex and sugar-daddies, clothes, and getting her own way. She uses school only as a stepping-stone for getting out of the houseafter all, nobody's paying her to go there. But if there's no money in it, why go? Meanwhile, Daddy decides it's time to move out of Brooklyn to truly fancy digs on Long Island, though this places him in the discomfiting position of not being absolutely hands-on with his dealers; and sure enough the rise of some young Turks leads to his arrest. Then he does something really stupid: he murders his wife's two weak brothers in jail with him on Riker's Island and gets two consecutive life sentences. Winter's then on her own, especially with Bullet, who may have replaced her dad as top hood, though when she selfishly fails to help her pregnant buddy Simone, there's worsemuch worseto come. Riveting, Thoroughly Entertaining w/Strong Characterization

The Coldest Winter Ever by Sister Souljah is a thoroughly engrossing, simply riveting book that I am very happy to have read. It is like a tell-all story from an urban teenaged girl's point-of-view. From the drug life to the privileged life, the story takes you on a journey that you will never forget. There's so much that can be said about this book, but I'll start with the main character Winter. This girl is sooo real, so authentic that I wondered "Who is Winter? Where is she?" SHE EXISTS out there somewhere. Sister Souljah did an excellent job characterizing Winter as well as the others (Midnight, Lauren, Santiaga, etc.). The way the story was written you were allowed to know Winter's every thought, whether you agreed with those thoughts or not. Winter was defined by what happened to her and how she reacted to the things that she experienced (mother's accident, father's jailing, being forced to live among strangers, lack of money, love for money...). And the plot had many twists and turns, shockers and laughs. My favorite line is "Bounce, nigga," which is what Winter said to a 'white man'. It was hilarious. Overall, I loved the story, the writing, the character, and some of the messages conveyed in this piece of work. It is highly recommended...a book that has "FILM ME" written all through its pages.

Well worth a read- couldn't put it down!

I just read this for a book group, and it was totally gripping. When I was reading it I didn't want to stop; when I stopped, I kept thinking about the story until I could get back to reading.

That being said, the main character is cold, cruel, and calculating. But that's not really Winter's fault, it's the way she was raised. I found myself rooting for her despite the awful things she does- abandon her mom and little sisters, get a friend to shoplift for her and then leaves her in jail, 9 mos pregnant, and refuses to pay bail- even assaulting an old lady and stealing her wallet.

This story paints a great picture of life in the projects as the child of a rich and powerful kingpin. Everyone around her lives in poverty and on assistance; she and her family have all the material possessions anyone could desire. Her father's job is to bring home the bacon; her mother's job is to look beautiful and expensive. Nobody in Winter's life has anything like a trade, or a degree, or legal employment. She has no examples of what a regular middle-class life looks like.

When her father's empire finally falls, both parents are taken to jail and Winter's three younger sisters are sent to three separate foster homes. Winter manages to stay on her own, and her mom is soon released from jail. Her mom wants to get her three other daughters back, but DCF won't release them without an apartment and some income. This is where I expected Winter and her mom to work together to make it happen.

Nope! Winter goes off on her own to try and get a hustle going, and her mom quickly falls into crack use and becomes homeless. When Winter sees her on the street she is ashamed and tries to avoid her.

At the end of the book, when Winter meets her sister Porsche for the first time in years, she has words of advice for her- but she chooses to withhold them. She won't help anyone, not even those closest to her. She is completely selfish up to the bitter end. She never understands why Midnight wasn't interested in her. The concepts of community and family, of education, of planning for a future, are completely foreign to her. She is smart, but not smart enough to break away from her father's lifestyle- even though it destroyed her family.

What a difference

Okay, I read this book back in 03 and I absolutely loved the drama Winter brought, wouldn't like someone like her in real life but the character was great. The fall of their family was sad but entertaining to read and follow along with. I really enjoyed Midnight and wanted to know more about his character. I told so many people about this book they thought I was crazy. Now...

Reread this book and I absolutely can't stand this book. Everything about it is annoying and I just wanted to rush through it because I knew how it ended and I couldn't wait for Winter to get what she needed. I was really just reading it before I caught up with Midnight's stories and I had to refresh myself with his character. His interactions with Souljah was really what I wanted to read about.

I have to give this book five stars because it had me feeling two different ways after reading it with a 13 year gap. I mean we all see the world a different way in our teens and I really liked this book but maybe I could relate more. But in my 30's...I just couldn't grasp what was going on in the book or what Winter was doing.

I've said before if a book makes you feel any kind of way it was a good book, at least 3 stars, and you can't bash it in reviews just because the character said or does something you personally don't like. This is one of those books for me. I'm not giving it 3 stars though because it really does deserve 5 for the complete opposite views I have of it.

Good study tool, but needs proper editing.

I received this book two days ago and have probably spent about 6-7 hours total with it so far.

It is good. It is helpful, and I would recommend it.

But, I had to stop, mid-study, to write this review because there are numerous typographical errors. There are some that are normal, that you could easily glance over and it would make no big deal, but there are others that affect the outcome of an answer.

Huge confidence blow, and not something you would expect from an $80 book designed to help you choose correct answers, no matter how long and dense it is.

I bought this book a few weeks before the July 2016 bar exam so I could do extra MBE questions without having to get on my computer for the prep course. The strategies and tactics section was helpful in attacking the question. The extra questions were good practice without having to devote an hour and a half every time I wanted to do a couple of questions. I went with 6th edition over 5th edition because of the 4 year gap between them.

Will revisit in 3 months when I get the exam results.

Excellent book for trainers that care to know joints better!

As a personal trainer, I'm always on the look out for more information. In this business, like many others, one should never stop learning and looking for more to learn. I've also been a joint-mobility expert for 10 years, and THIS book is an excellent resource to understand joints and movement futher (especially when exercise to obsessed with muscle and NOT joints). I know I am NOT a doctor or physical therapist, BUT it does make sense that personal trains must take time to learn more about joints than muscles. Yes, know your muscles and how they work as a group, but the joint have much more to them as they tend to be the victim of the abuse from muscles (be it good or bad movement).
That being said, the book is one of the better books out there in my opinion as an educated personal trainer. Other trainers who are in it for money, women, ego, or like just tell people what to do will not buy this book. On the other hand, those who care and figure out they must be aggressive with education (and not just college, but independent study as well) would benefit from this book. How much? Depends on a)if you take the time to read, remember, and understand the material in the book, b) practice while learning, c) make sure you offer joint range of motion measurements in a NON-medicinal sense (use as a measureable index and NOT as a medical or diagnostic tool) and make that clear to clients. PS: Don't forget to purchase a quality Goniometer (search the internet).

Book notes: Pictures are black and while with red line accents and some red for muscles in drawings. People who are NOT doctors or therapists (ie, Personal Trainers) would be a little or a lot lost with some or all of the numberical data and references and literature referals. I suggest you read EVER WORD and be cautious in what you do and when you use the measurements. The teaching pictures are reasonable, but I wish they were in color, larger, and the text was more friendly.

good beginner book for goniometry.

I am a student in a physical therapy doctoral program and this was one of the required books for the class. This book has been fairly useful in studying goniometry. The pictures are good and the descriptions of patient/therapist positioning is very clear. The only thing that I would add to it would be a quick reference spreadsheet for goniometer placement so one does not have to flip back and forth through the book if you are looking for a single reference point for a joint motion.

time to wake up...

there is a ton of information in this book about remedies for various ailments, which is why i was tempted to keep it. however, every time i turned a page, i stumbled on more outdated, cringe-inducing, food-pyramid-era misinformation, such as, saturated fats like coconut oil increase your risk of heart attack, and you should have corn oil or canola oil instead. (seriously?!) it doesn't recommend sucralose (splenda), but says it's "metabolically inert" and would work well for diabetics. no mention of the fact that this stuff was originally meant to be a pesticide. oh, and go ahead and eat that plastic "food" -- margarine in a tub -- because we wouldn't want to get fat on butter...and while you're at it, stock up on low-fat dairy products (made by those nice food manufacturers), which have had all the nutrients sucked out of them. if the author had taken the time to look into the latest nutritional research, she would realize all of this "common knowledge" was basically propaganda that is now being debunked. coconut oil, for example, is one of the best foods you can give your body, but the corn oil industry was responsible for vilifying it to beef up their own profits. all the research is out there, but despite the fact that this is the "updated" 2010 edition, you're not going to get anything cutting-edge here. expect more of the same old regurgitated B.S. we've been fed for the past several decades, information that has served to make us a nation of fat, sick, misinformed people. a book that presents itself as the gold standard of nutritional healing can't get up to speed with information i can find in a simple google search? that's either laziness, or more propaganda. either way, i rate that a fail.

Reader Beware!!

I looked up a condition called "interstitial cystitis" in the version of this book that I found today at the local health food store. I was horrified to see that the recommendations given for treating this condition were exactly the same as for cystitis caused by a bacterial infection. This could not be more wrong, or dangerous. As an R.N. and sufferer of interstitial cystitis, I can tell you that it is a well known fact that cranberry, Vitamin C, and certain B vitamins are absolutely contraindicated as they will greatly intensify the bladder pain in an already damaged bladder due to high acidity. On the contrary, the goal is to de-acidify the urine so that it is not harmed more than it already is. I can't help but wonder if there are more grave errors in this book.

Errors in Hypothyoidism

I have used these desk-reference manuals for many years. It was a doctor who recommended that I get one and she was right. My current copy is '93, so it was time for a new one. Every recommendation I've ever used from this manual has worked perfectly. When I got the new one, however, I noticed some issues and a significant error.

I bought it specifically to get the most current information on thyroid issues. I noticed that under the disorder Hypothyroidism in the Considerations section, it says "see Wilson's Disease in Rare Disorders in Part Two." Hmmm. There are some issues with that.

There is no mention of a Rare Disorders section in the index at the front of the book, not on its own, nor as a section within Part Two. No mention of it at all.

First of all, the layout of the page headings in this version is horrible. In prior versions each separate disorder was in obvious bold print with dividing lines above and beneath that made the heading clearly distinguishable from the rest of the text, which makes it much easier and quicker to find. But in this new version, it is very difficult to read and takes significantly more time to actually find what you're looking for. Each disorder is just in small print that seems to be bold type but it is so slight you can't even tell at first. As if that's not enough, it is almost impossible to find Rare Disorders (with poor layout and no clear headings) which is just a small section within The Disorders section in Part Two, and is only noted by just a small print area at the top of the page with no distinction on the page itself to determine where the Rare Disorders start and end as separated from The Disorders general section.

In addition to that, when I finally found Wilson's Disease, it was not in the Rare Disorders section at all, but just within The Disorders general section.

Furthermore, the direction as listed above at the end of the Hypothyroidism/Considerations section that says to see "Wilson's Disease" is itself an error. It should say "see Wilson's Syndrome" which is a completely different disorder. Wilson's Disease (hepatolenticular degeneration or inherited copper toxicosis) is when the body is unable to metabolize the element copper. Wilson's Syndrome has to do with thyroid symptoms. Wilson's Disease also has opposite instructions to instructions you would have from Hypothyroidism and Wilson's Syndrome which could really confuse someone. Got that part?

Now, when you do find Wilson's Syndrome, which is related to Hypothyroidism, and remember it says under Hypothyroidism to see the section on Wilson's Disease...when you finally realize the error and find Wilson's Syndrome, it says nothing but "See under Hypothyroidism". Extremely frustrating.

By the way, Wilson's Syndrome isn't under Rare Disorders either, just in case you were wondering.

I have to say, the layout of the page in this book really stinks. In a desk-reference, you need things to be very well organized and easily distinguishable, so that you can find things quickly and easily. On that score this book really falls short.

I can't judge the other information yet, but that was my initial journey into the new version. This fifth edition is significantly larger with more information than the older editions. These reference books have a great reputation and are highly regarded by physicians. But, this latest fifth edition is not as good as the others. I hope this error is not indicative of the rest of the book!

Pictures are nice but descriptions are vague

Bought this book as it was required for my PNP program. I'm not a fan. Pictures are nice but descriptions are vague. Hard to use for diagnosis and management. I've seen better derm books from colleagues. Wish I could return it.
