In an unnamed South American country, a world-renowned soprano sings at a birthday party in honor of a visiting Japanese industrial titan. His hosts hope that Mr. Hosokawa can be persuaded to build a factory in their Third World backwater. Alas, in the opening sequence, just as the accompanist kisses the soprano, a ragtag band of 18 terrorists enters the vice-presidential mansion through the air conditioning ducts. Their quarry is the president, who has unfortunately stayed home to watch a favorite soap opera. And thus, from the beginning, things go awry.

Among the hostages are not only Hosokawa and Roxane Coss, the American soprano, but an assortment of Russian, Italian, and French diplomatic types. Reuben Iglesias, the diminutive and gracious vice president, quickly gets sideways of the kidnappers, who have no interest in him whatsoever. Meanwhile, a Swiss Red Cross negotiator named Joachim Messner is roped into service while vacationing. He comes and goes, wrangling over terms and demands, and the days stretch into weeks, the weeks into months.

With the omniscience of magic realism, Ann Patchett flits in and out of the hearts and psyches of hostage and terrorist alike, and in doing so reveals a profound, shared humanity. Her voice is suitably lyrical, melodic, full of warmth and compassion. Hearing opera sung live for the first time, a young priest reflects: Never had he thought, never once, that such a woman existed, one who stood so close to God that God's own voice poured from her. How far she must have gone inside herself to call up that voice. It was as if the voice came from the center part of the earth and by the sheer effort and diligence of her will she had pulled it up through the dirt and rock and through the floorboards of the house, up into her feet, where it pulled through her, reaching, lifting, warmed by her, and then out of the white lily of her throat and straight to God in heaven. Joined by no common language except music, the 58 international hostages and their captors forge unexpected bonds. Time stands still, priorities rearrange themselves. Ultimately, of course, something has to give, even in a novel so imbued with the rich imaginative potential of magic realism. Lucky Mr. Hosokawa. The well-connected Japanese businessman, now in an unnamed South American country on yet another job, is having a very special birthday party. At the home of the country's vice president, opera singer Roxane Cos will be performing for him and his guests. But what's this? Armed men invading the premises? These ragtag revolutionaries are looking for the president and disappointed that he is not there, but that doesn't stop them from holding the party goers hostage. What happens after that was, for this reviewer, a story that failed to ignite. Patchett (The Patron Saint of Liars) generates little tension as she moves her players around the board, and one is disappointed that there is little reflection about the head-on clash of art and life. This book is getting a big promotional pitch, however, so libraries may want to consider.

Against this grand backdrop, the smallest gestures bloom with meaning: a pretty governess stitching up the cheek of her employer with her sewing kit; a young terrorist discovering the tyranny of wearing a watch; an exasperated French diplomat risking his life to peel an eggplant with a proper knife.

In comparison with Ann Patchett's reputation, this magum opus was okay. You can feel other writers' frustration. Superfiical.

I candidly do not know how to feel about this book. Although there are plenty of parts I did like. The writing was mediocre, and there wasn't any true depth with any of the characters. There could have been more.

When this book first got published, I saw this book everywhere, and I was admittedly intrigued. I only bought and read this book because of Lucy Grealy, who wrote the heart-wrenching Autobiography of a Face. Ann Patchett was purportedly a friend of Grealy, and Patchett wrote her own book on Grealy. From the media summaries of Patchett's memoir, I do not think Patchett understood her friend at all. Her criticisms of her friend appear condescending, superficial, and even condemning, and I think because her friend is no longer in existence, Patchett saw a wonderful opportunity. One of judgment and no understanding, and you cannot judge her friend unless you walked in her shoes. But I know in Patchett's simple mind, she thought she was doing a good thing.

Bel Canto was okay.

Patchett does not have Grealy's command of words - or an inviting, welcoming writing style. Patchett's words are staid, as if she wants to be a writer, but she has nowhere to go. No doubt, she has had many teachers who praised her, encouraged her, and thought she was at least some apitute. Unfortunately for Patchett, she took it to heart, and did not realize her teachers were just being nice. And for Patchett's part, she is earnest, and she took many classes. She is obviously educated, diligent, tries hard but she has no talent. This will be the last book I will read of Patchett, and I do not care to read again. She has nothing to teach me. I cannot learn from her. And her writing is no different from any stock book.

Patchett's confidence is munificent, but no one told her she should decide on another vocation. I do not know how this book got published. The writing was neither stellar, poetic or precise, and I forced myself to plow on through. I concede that Patchett managed to provoke some emotion, and I cared for many of the characters. But a lot of this book was not convincing, and it was on par with a Michael Bay film. The relationships and dialogue seemed to come straight from Michael Bay film. I just could not care. And this is her magnum opus.

Let's forget all that. Let's focus on the story, which was not even original. Story of how a poor South American country wanted to beckon Howskawa, and invited opera singer Roxane Coss to delight him. Howskakwa's interpreter is Gen. Howskwawa lives a prviileged life, loves opera, and because of a birthday present from one of his daughters, loves Coss.

They cannot speak; Gen serves as interpreter, but Roxanne falls in love with Howskawaw.

Let's forget the mediocre writing. Let's move on to the story.

One of the central flaws was how this renegade group managed to even get in the house. Don't these heads of state have security? I know how they snuck in, but it seems they did it without a modicum of protest. Even a baby could elude all security protocols.

Not once did I buy into soprano Roxanne Coss's love affair with the chief admirer of her music. The most poignant relationship for me was Gen and Carmen, and I thought Carmen one of the most intriguing characters of the book, and I wanted to know more about her: her home life, how she became a terrorist, her infatuation with the interpreter.

Also the ending was abrupt and unfinished. Sad lovers married each other, and each are unhappy and in mourning. I wanted to know what happened to the rest of the hostages.

Based on this book, do not think will read Patchett again. Did not learn from her; she has nothing to offer me.

Hostages and terrorists, changes and growth

What happens when a large group of multicultural people who do not speak the same language are kidnapped and held by terrorists for a long period? How do they develop and change? How do the terrorists change over time? How do the hostages and terrorists come to relate to each other? These are the questions posed and answered in Bel Canto and how the opera singer touches the lives of almost everyone. You may feel it is a bit improbable and too detailed at the beginning but sticking with it you will get into it and wonder at how the plot develops wanting to see each new unfolding until... suddenly it comes to an inevitable conclusion which you probably were not expecting. It was a more interesting and compelling read than most I have had in recent times. I recommend it to anyone tired of the same old plots. This is definitely not that.

Why people "Love" or "Hate" this book !?!

I learned about this book while reading The Artisan: An Artistic Assassin Thriller - which is a super fast-reading thriller that I loved.

But before I bought Bel Canto I knew by reading the plethora of reviews and by being familiar with the genius of Ann Patchett in general, that this was going to be a novel with a completely different pace.

And I loved it!!

But for those of you that are having trouble "getting it" ...

Here is why some people Don't "Understand" this book:

1) They are expecting a typical American Style thriller that is high in action. but lower in emotion and characterization through action like the wonderful Black List: A Thriller. Yes, these books are great, but they are different.

2) They have never read the English thriller books such as Where Eagles Dare that are very, very descriptive of every character and the "situations" they are in. Bel Canto is very much written like a true English thriller.

3) They are utterly unfamiliar with the genre of literary fiction such as People of the Book and are perhaps don't have the right kind of attention span.

Here why people "Love, Love, Love" this book:

1) The tension starts off with a bang then continues to build to peaks and valleys through out the book, making them always want to know what is around the corner.

2) The real-ness of the characters that are so unique yet so fabulously true to type. Byt he end of the book every reader know he will take this characters with him for the rest of his life.

3) The privileged look the reader gets inside the culture and psychological progression of a long term hostage situation.

4) When an intelligent reader reads this or any of Ann Patchett's books, he is changed forever. Your perspective and your thoughts are changed forever.

And ...

If you take your time and read this book, you will thank me forever.

Also you might want to re-read The Godfather this book is definitely worth a second round.

The 10 Year Award recognizes proven value and performance (across one or more of a wide range of criteria) after a building has been complete and in operation for at least a decade. The CTBUH Innovation Award recognizes a specific area of recent innovation in the tall building industry that has been incorporated into the design of, or significantly tested in, the construction, operation, or refurbishment of a tall building project. The Performance Award recognizes a building with proven value and performance over a minimum of three years. The CTBUH also gives two annual Lifetime Achievement awards to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the design or technical advancement of tall buildings.

Antony Wood is Executive Director of the CTBUH, responsible for the day-to-day running of the Council and steering in conjunction with the Chairman and the Executive Committee. His field of specialism is the design, and in particular the sustainable design, of tall buildings. Based at the College of Architecture, Illinois Institute of Technology, Antony is also an associate professor there and leads an annual ‘Tall and Green’ building design studio.

Kindergarten-Grade 4-After giving most of her money to a beggar, young Settareh spends her last coins on a cracked jug instead of purchasing fabric for a new dress to wear to the prince's celebrations. Resigned to remaining home, she discovers that the pot is inhabited by a pari that is able to grant her every wish. She attends the festival, catches the eye of the prince, leaves behind a diamond ankle bracelet, and is found by the queen. Settareh unwisely reveals the secret of the jug to her stepsisters, who steal it and instruct it to get rid of the young woman. The jug self-destructs, leaving behind six jeweled hairpins that, once placed in Settareh's hair, turn her into a turtledove. When the grieving prince befriends the bird, he finds the pins and pulls them out, thus restoring his beloved. The story is well told, although the drama, and hence the pace, is somewhat subdued. The narrative reads smoothly and majestically and Climo explains her choices in a source note. Florczak's sumptuous illustrations have jewel-like tones that glow against the brownline-paper background, and traditional designs decorate the text. The illustrations are realistic and appealing, although in one scene, Settareh is wearing a blue veil with her face exposed when the text specifies that she and the other women draped themselves in black to conceal their faces. Despite this minor flaw, this is a suitable complement to Climo's other "Cinderella" stories.

PLB 0-06-026765-8 A luminescent interpretation of an ancient Persian tale is Climo's latest entry to her multicultural collection of Cinderella tales (The Irish Cinderlad, 1996, etc.). Motherless Settareh, whose name means star (a reference to the shape of the birthmark on her cheek), has a typically Cinderella-esque existence with her stepmother and stepsisters. That the ignored and often neglected young woman blossoms into a beauty is a foregone conclusion, but here her aid manifests itself as a parifairyin a mysterious blue jar, and Settareh captures the interest of the young prince at the New Year celebration. The lush descriptions of an authentic time and place lend an exotic tone to the familiar tale: ``Each girl and every woman, no matter her age, covered her head with a cloak so that no stranger might look on her face. Then, like a flock of black birds, the mothers, daughters, sisters, and cousins flew down the road to the marketplace.'' Florczak's meticulously researched illustrations faithfully depict the ornate beauty of an ancient land. Life, Love and Jealousy in Persia

In this Persian variant of a Cinderella story, Shirley Climo has used language which invokes the flowery language of the Middle East without the wordiness. Robert Florczak's illustrations show both the simplicity and complexity of Persian art. An excellent pairing of author and illustrator to present a different version of a favorite folk tale.

Dr. Jerry M. Linenger experienced just this and describes his harrowing but ennobling five months aboard Mir in Off the Planet, a memoir that evokes the excitement of living every day as a life-threatening adventure. Linenger's very personal writing style draws the reader into the story quickly, breezing through his childhood, Annapolis training, medical school, and selection as an astronaut, then moving quickly to the Mir assignment and its aftermath.

Linenger isn't shy about sharing his opinions. Chapter titles like "Broken Trust" and "An Attempted Coverup" show his feelings about the bizarre relationship between the crew and mission control that may have kept him and his Russian comrades in constant danger. 'Off The Planet: Surviving Five Perilous Months Aboard the Space Station Mir' by Jerry M. Linenger is one of the most readable. Off the Planet sheds new light on such present developments as the Russians' determination to continue the Mir after their repeated commitments to abandon it, combined with their commitments to the International Space Station. The book makes one think that perhaps the United States would be better off partnering in space with, say, Somalia or Lower Slobovia. Russian Psychologist, cure thyself and thy kindred. But he paid a high price for these distinctions. Inside, Mir was as mess, and several power failures lefts its inhabitants in total darkness. Worst of all, Linenger reports, was the lack of professionalism among their Russian handlers. "Mission control in Moscow became our enemy rather than our friend." he writes, "our nemesis rather than our support structure." Mission control threatened to cut the Russian astronauts pay if they performed poorly, and dangled bonuses for doing well. A Great Glimpse of Life in Space

This book is easy to read and has lots of good pictures, so when I first thumbed through the pages I thought it was going to be another PR job for NASA. Much to my delight, when I actually "dug in" I discovered an original, candid and insightful discussion of US-Russian collaboration and of the author's experiences on Mir. Sure, Linenger comes off as a "right stuff" astronaut: after all, you can't earn a series of degrees and succeed as a military officer, as a physician, and a spacefarer unless you have outstanding qualifications and high self confidence. Despite the author's occasionally overbearing "can do" mentality, Linenger offers a balanced view of life aboard an aging Space Station. It is full of useful but usually tasteful detail on how people survive psychologically and relate to one another under prolonged isolation and confinement. The stories are interesting, and in the telling Linenger gives us insights into everything from interpersonal to international relations. I finished this book reminded that living and working in space is a complex, multifaceted endeavor that defies simple analysis. Dr. Linenger's book not only entertains, it increases our understanding of people in exotic and stressful environments. I have read at least two other major books about life on Mir, and still found this one engaging and informative.

A Fine Astronaut Memoir of the Strife-Filled Shuttle-Mir Program of the Mid-1990s

During the middle part of the 1990s NASA and the Russian Space Agency engaged in a set of cooperative missions that resulted in nine Space Shuttle-Mir link ups between 1995 and 1998, including rendezvous, docking, and crew transfers. Jerry Linenger was one of the NASA astronauts sent to fly on Mir, serving there between January 12 and May 15, 1997. This book recounts his experiences training for this mission, including the difficult time he spent at the Cosmonaut training facility at Star City, as well as the mission itself. As he noted about the Russians at Star City, "the goal of helping cosmonauts and astronauts better prepare for a mission was not a shared goal. Making money off the Americans seemed to be the overriding consideration" (p. 43).

A centerpiece of this book is the exceptionally difficult crises on Mir while Linenger was aboard. The first took place on February 24, 1997, when Linenger and his fellow crewmembers fought a fire caused when an oxygen generator in Kvant 1 malfunctioned and ignited. While the fire burned for only about ninety seconds, the crew was exposed to heavy smoke for five to seven minutes and donned masks in response. Linenger had been in the Spektr module working on his computer when he heard Mir's master alarm go off. He shut down his computer--in case the power should go off--put on some protective gear, and rushed as best he could in his weightless condition to the scene of the accident. They all realized that the fire was serious, it could jeopardize the station and their lives, for it blocked access to one of the Soyuz spacecraft needed for return to Earth. Crewmembers extinguished the fire with foam from three fire extinguishers, each containing two liters of a water-based liquid. The fire was not small. Burning in all directions in the microgravity of the space station, the oxygen from the generator fueled hydra-like flames up to three feet long. Periodically, said Linenger, bits of molten metal from the oxygen generator went splattered the bulkhead. Once the fire had been contained they started purging the atmosphere of the smoke, and Linenger, a physician, examined the other members of the crew to ensure they had not been injured. The crew wore masks and goggles until an analysis of the Mir atmosphere ensured that they experienced no serious health risk.

The fire foreshadowed a series of problems aboard Mir during the spring and summer of 1997. Oxygen generators broke down, the automatic docking system malfunctioned, various types of equipment both great and small interrupted the normally monotonous activities, the station's orientation system broke down, the power system failed when the solar arrays lost their position toward the Sun, and leaks in the Kvant-2 cooling system forced numerous repairs and seemingly endless fussing to keep it running. It appeared that the Mir crew, including Linenger, spent the majority of their days repairing the space station. They gingerly positioned Mir in relation to the Sun so that they could control temperature on various parts of the station. The environment on Mir was uncomfortable, and the crew complained about it.

Linenger believed that Russian mission control failed to inform the crew about the status of their station. He expressed nothing but praise for his fellow crewmembers for their strength and perseverance throughout the mission. Even with communication difficulties, a cloud of doubt surrounding the station's systems, difficulties with mission control, and fires and toxic fumes, the crew worked relatively well under very difficult circumstances.

Linenger tells his story with verve and style, and not a little humor, but that that barely hides a cynicism aboiut the whole effort. He concluded, "That the shuttle Mir program is primarily a political rather than a technical endeavor is obvious to anyone working on it or familiar with it" (p. 113). He also notes that the Shuttle/Mir program was essentially a form of foreign aid by the Clinton administration to Russia using NASA's space exploration money rather than funds appropriated through the various foreign aid programs of the United States. He concluded: "the U.S. government perceived that engaging the Russians in a cooperative space undertaking was reason enough to stick by Mir. Or perhaps having a means for our government to funnel millions of dollars in foreign aid to Russia under the guise of `rent money' so the United States can send astronauts to Mir is a valuable political stratagem" (p. 248).

In many ways this is a fascinating book, pulling back the curtain on the Shuttle/Mir cooperative program between the U.S. and Russia in the mid-1990s.

A personal account

I well remember the morning of 18 September 1999, my son's 10th birthday, when I took him outside in the early morning for a splendid pass directly overhead by Mir. I have never seen before or since a better pass - right over the house. I waved up and tried to kid my kid that I'd arranged the deal just for him.
I've read Foale's book, I've read Dragonfly, and I've read a few other accounts of life aboard the dilapidated Mir space station. Jerry's account is a personal one, and like any other astronaut he talks about himself and his experience, but he also gives a good picture of conditions aboard and the tensions between crew members and ground control. It must have been a very challenging environment in a spacecraft filled with garbage and outdated equipment, requiring constant attention, in a space program kept aloft by political commitments rather than any real scientific need.
It is good to read Jerry's side of the story and to see how he dealt with the inefficiencies, the corruption and the constant malfunctions of the program. We haven't heard the last of Mir just yet, and I look forward to seeing an increasingly complete account of the flights coming out over the years to come.
I'll agree that Dragonfly is the more balanced account, a real eye-opener in its own right, but Jerry Linenger's account fills a gap in the story, and I can recommend it to any space junkie wanting a fix.

I was hoping for some newer country songs but these were ok. I am a beginner self taught pianist and I was able to play most of them

Country Piano Book

Alfred's Basic Country Piano Book Level 1 has some really fun selections that offer a challenge beyond the other level one books. While I could sight read many of the numbers in the sacred and popular collections, I have had to really work on most of these because they include conventions of country music not commonly used in other genres: the addition of grace notes, certain styles of bass playing reminiscent of guitar picking, the use of parallel thirds and sixths rather than simple chords and thirds, harmony above the melody in some cases. I am quite certain, however, that once I learn the songs, I will enjoy playing them. The first four songs are pretty simple songs written in C. The rest of them have either a syncopated melody or a challenging bass pattern or some accidentals to be aware of. Many of these conventions did not appear in the regular lesson book. Songs in order of appearance are "Beautiful Brown Eyes," "The Yellow Rose of Texas," "I Wish I Was Eighteen Again," "Old Joe Clark," "Worried Man Blues," "Your Cheatin' Heart,"
"Cold,Cold Heart," "Swingin'," "King of the Road," "Mammas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys," "Make the World Go Away," and "Green, Green Grass of Home." I would recommend this book to any beginner who would like a challenge.

Good reading for sales class

It is a good book for someone without a strong background in sales. I enjoyed the part where it shows different scenarios of how to sell to people depending on your/their personality. There are more things about sales that this book didn't covered, such as how to manage a NO as a response, and how to plan and enable a successful Sales team.

Raised at the legendary Marina Del Rey Skatepark—where his father was the manager and the Dogtown and Z-Boys crew were his mentors—Christian Hosoi never questioned that he would become a full-time skateboarder. But no one could have predicted his meteoric rise to the apex of a burgeoning sport—or the spectacular way he would crash and then create himself anew.

A professional skater by thirteen, known for his rock-star flair and dramatic aerials, Hosoi was at the top of the world before he was twenty, engaged in the rivalry that would shape years of skating: Christian Hosoi vs. Tony Hawk. At the height of his celebrity in the late 1980s and early '90s, Hosoi was the highest-paid skateboarder in the world and made the most of his celebrity status, counting Hollywood's elite as his friends. But the kid who first got stoned at age eight later found himself smoking meth full-time. And as Hawk walked away with every accolade, Hosoi went underground.

In January 2000, he was convicted for trafficking $65,000's worth of methamphetamine across state lines. About the Author

Christian Hosoi is widely recognized as one of the greatest skateboarders of all time. A professional by thirteen, he went on to become an industry icon. After serving time in prison for drug trafficking, he devoted his life to Christianity. Since then, he has risen to prominence in the skateboarding world once again and was the subject of a full-length documentary narrated by Dennis Hopper, Rising Son. Hosoi is an outreach pastor at the Sanctuary, "the raddest church" in Huntington Beach, and lives in Southern California with his wife, Jennifer, and four sons.

Chris Ahrens has worked as a full-time writer for nearly thirty years, with four popular books on surfing to his credit and bylines in publications that include the Los Angeles Times, The San Diego Union-Tribune, Outside, Family Circle, Skateboarder, Surfer, Surfing, and The Surfer's Journal. He wrote and directed the award-winning skateboarding documentary D.O.P.E. (Death or Prison Eventually), and served as editor-in-chief of Risen magazine from its inception in 2002 until May 2010.

Hosoi is the Prodigal Skater

Do you know that Prodigal Son story in the Bible? The one where the cocky and arrogant son wants his father's inheritance RIGHT NOW and he gets it. Then he takes off to see the world, spends all of the money and finds himself starving as a slave in a foreign land? But then, when the son hits rock-bottom, he is humbled. He doesn't feel he is worthy enough to be called the son of his father, but that is where he was so very wrong. After returning to the father, the son learns that he is forgiven and the father is overjoyed that the son's heart is finally true and just.

Well, that's pretty much the life that Christian Hosoi has lived.
And the new book, Hosoi by Christian Hosoi, explains it all.

The subtitle of Hosoi is "My Life as a Skateboarder Junkie Inmate Pastor" which describes the book brilliantly.

As a Skateboarder, Hosoi literally had it all. Christian Hosoi was one of the first super-elite rock-star skateboarders EVER. With endorsement deals that were unheard of at the time, Hosoi lived a Hollywood life, even setting up a huge skate ramp behind his rented house that was once owned by W.C. Fields. He traveled the world, hobnobbed with A-list celebrities and was mobbed by fans wherever he went.

As a Junkie, his life slowly spiraled out of control. Hosoi smoked his first joint at 8 years old. His father gave it to him. From there he slowly escalated the drug use, embracing the party culture along the way. Hosoi got high with Hollywood but shortly found himself sleeping in a stolen van. The drug life came to a pinnacle when he strapped $65,000 worth of meth to his body and boarded a plane to Hawaii. Police and prison were waiting in Hawaii for him.

As an Inmate, Hosoi had a huge reality check. At first, he just couldn't believe he had been caught. After all, he was Christian Hosoi, awesomeness personified. Others in prison didn't see it that way. In prison, Hosoi learned humility and patience and, most importantly, he learned of the power of God's redeeming grace over a life lived in a very less than perfect way.

As a Pastor, life has been radically changed for Hosoi and his family. After being released from prison, Hosoi settled into married life as a father of four boys. His wife began their church journey via the Calvary Chapel, but these days Hosoi is an associate pastor at a church called The Sanctuary, located in Huntington Beach, California. And quite miraculously, he also led his mother and father to Jesus.

The book itself is engaging and a very interesting look behind the scenes for those of us who were around in the 1980s. Christian Hosoi is not a genius author, so the writing technique of this book is very clunky at times, switching between past and present tense at random. Hosoi is an incredibly honest story, though, which can be difficult to read, especially the chapters where Hosoi spiraled out of control.

Christian Hosoi has lived the life that legends are made of and doesn't show signs of stopping. As a pastor, Hosoi is sharing the gospel (he even briefly mentions demon possession in this book). He is also entering and winning skating competitions again.

As a life that has been lived out very much in the public eye, Hosoi's story is one that readers might feel they already know. But Hosoi's story isn't one that focuses strictly on the facts surrounding skating and winning. Christian Hosoi deeply expresses the joy of riding high, the depths of drug abuse and the glory of God's grace.

Conviction, Compassion and Courage!

Being an old school skater and punk musician from the 80s who pulled a prodigal at age 19, suffered through years of debt, divorce, and personal misery, not to return until age 34, this book really moved my heart. I feel for guys like Hosoi and so many others with similar stories. He inspired me back then as a skater but inspires me even more now, as I too have entered full-time ministry just a two years ago at age 38.

As I read this book, one word kept coming to mind - Conviction. Almost like everything he did, he did with conviction. But it wasn't until his focus changed that his conviction was as intended. While reading this book, my heart wrenched with compassion for him and those around him. It still does. I purchased this book intending to read it over my week-long vacation in the Outer Banks. I finished it in a just a few days as I couldn't put it down. A day after I finished it, I went to a skate shop in the Outer Banks and saw a banner that the Bones Brigade tour was coming and the top name on the banner was Christian Hosoi. I thought "What courage!" I saw the Bones Brigade in my hometown 20+ years ago just before I decided to walk away from God. Praise God for guys like Hosoi and for opening the door to us, letting us knock, inviting us in, running out to us, hugging us, and loving us even more.

Very compelling and truthfully written

When I opened this book, it took me eight hours straight to complete. I was intrigued by the life that he lived. "Bucket full of holes" Christian navigates us thought the highlights of his life through good and bad and shares with us his connection with Jesus and how he has found that there is more to life than what was at his grasp. I was captivated by how I myself could relate to some of the events he struggled with in life. A must read!
