Perhaps mining for block rewards reminds people of scams like chain letters

At the core of this scholarly book is a dissection of bitcoin's biggest achievement. That is the transmission of value over the internet, an inherently insecure channel, without any reliance on a trusted third party. Even the harshest critics of bitcoin the currency (as opposed to Bitcoin the protocol) would agree the technology has legs, and then some.

Pedro Franco, the author of 'Understanding Bitcoin: Cryptography, engineering and economics' begins with a lapel-grabbing analogy: "Bitcoin could be used as an open platform for the exchange of value in much the same way that the internet is an open platform for the exchange of information."

He adds that it would have been impossible to predict the importance of social networking in 1994, for example, reminding us we are currently witnessing "the first round of applications in the cryptocurrencies ecosystem".

Franco's preface claims that a sceptical view of Bitcoin is perhaps the easiest to understand, which could be taken as a hint at the technical discussions that will follow. The sceptical view he is talking about is driven by a number of issues.

It was very important in the beginning, when bitcoin bootstrapped itself into relevance, to rely on its miners to spread the word, to market it. This they did, sending it viral. Added to this hype, is the fact that miners are paid in bitcoin for their work securing the public ledger of transactions.

This self-generating style of remuneration, combined with a wildly fluctuating exchange price, earned bitcoin a reputation among some as some kind of carefully wrought confidence trick. Perhaps mining for block rewards reminds people of scams like chain letters. Then there's Satoshi, bitcoin's nebulous mastermind, who also mined about a million bitcoins in the early days.

Doubts seemed to be confirmed by events like the collapse of the Mt.Gox exchange, or the closure of Silk Road - formative events which had a seismic impact on the exchange value of bitcoin. Franco doesn't name names, however. He simply states that Bitcoin should not be confused with a Ponzi scheme because it is decentralised and not controlled by any individual.

But in the fast-evolving and fiercely polarised world of bitcoin, it's become impossible make pronouncements on the technology's future from an entirely impartial standpoint. Facing off the sceptics is a devoutly anti-corporate hardcore of bitcoin enthusiasts, who would sooner join nodes and declare cyber-geddon on the world's banks than see them squeeze a cent out of cryptocurrencies.

Part One: Introduction and Economics

Living on bitcoin
London pair endure forced fasts but survive month-long challenge
The book promises financial professionals a comprehensive guide to bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. In this regard, Franco's position could be described as a liberal third way. He takes a measured pop at the economic policies of reserve banks, but this is balanced by a passing invitation to the lower orders of the financial services sector, such as those involved in electronic payments.

For example, Franco discusses ways of resolving disputes over transactions using funds held in escrow: this facility is built into credit cards, but is lacking from bitcoin. "Credit card processors are good candidates to provide these services, leveraging their expertise in dispute mediation," he says.

Bitcoin start-ups are attractive because they seem to be able to hurdle prohibitive barriers to highly regulated financial services industry, such as holding a large capital base.

But bitcoin currently inhabits a regulatory grey area. The issuance of private currencies is permitted under US law, provided they don't resemble the dollar. Since bitcoin is a decentralised system it cannot be classed as a money transmitter. However businesses that deal in it can, like payment processors and bitcoin exchanges. These fall under the definition of money transmitters in the US, which require a licence to operate from each state.

Recent updates from America's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) declared that neither bitcoin investors nor miners should be considered money transmitters, but this ruling did not cover web wallet services.

At stake here are bitcoin's very low transaction fees. The average fee in the remittance market is reported to be in the range of 8% to 9%, as opposed to bitcoin transactions which cost between 0.01% and 0.05%.

Standard anti-money laundering (AML) and know your customer (KYC) regulations cover all money transmitters. These compliance costs are ultimately passed onto customers. In defence of looming regulations, cryptocurrency advocates argue that money laundering using bitcoin would be very risky because all transaction records are kept in a public ledger.

"A regulatory framework that took into account this transparency could help reduce the compliance costs of money transmitting services," argues Franco.

Franco talks about "trust" when comparing the operations of cryptocurrency holdings to the way assets are held by banks. He refers to practices such as fractional reserve banking, where the bank holds only a small percentage of the money deposited and lends the rest back into the financial system.

"Although nothing prevents an institution from practising fractional reserve banking with bitcoins, it is not clear that users would favour such an institution," he says.

Bitcoin exchanges that might have carried on fractional reserve banking are the sorts of companies that users should not trust. Regarding a cryptocurrency lender of last resort, an advantage would be "keeping the monetary authority honest".

Bitcoin ATMs will probably fall under same level of regulatory compliance as money transmitters, and might require banking relationships, he states. The obvious future application of these would be using bitcoins to buy currency in foreign countries and therefore avoiding the charges/fees associated with travellers cheques.

Part Two: Bitcoin Technology

Franco states in his preface that certain of the technical sections of the book can be safely skipped by those who are not attempting to implement the Bitcoin protocol. In any case, he should be praised for his clear and concise explanation of cryptography, which is the subject of the first chapter in the book's technical analysis, despite his admission that "a single chapter does not do justice to the subject, and the treatment here is necessarily shallow and incomplete".

He starts by looking at public key encryption: using an algorithm to generate a mathematically linked public-private keypair. Public keys are exchanged and used to encrypt messages, which can only be decrypted by the person holding the private key. A bitcoin wallet is simply a collection of private keys used to sign transactions with the bitcoin ledger, which holds a record of the amount of funds available to each address.

Bitcoin wallets generally offer additional encryption of the private keys they hold, and the wallet itself can be distributed across several devices so that accessing the funds would require cooperation between the devices.

Storing private keys offline is also highly recommended. Despite the complexity of cryptographic security, the safest approach in many respects remains the "paper wallet" i.e. printing out bitcoin addresses and private keys on paper and hiding them somewhere safe. Franco makes the point that offline storage on disk or USB can corrupt over time so back them up. Losing the keys generally means you lose the bitcoins.

The blockchain technology is an amalgam of cryptography techniques. It borrowed proof-of-work function from Hashcash, which was introduced to curb spam on email, and combined it with linked time-stamping to arrive at a way of securing the distributed database. Franco analyses the useful pieces of technology that are combined to create the blockchain's innovation, and also traces each component back to its "cypherpunk" roots in the 1990s.

To prevent two transactions from spending the same funds, the protocol decides that the valid transaction is the one that is time-stamped on the blockchain first. The transaction is further secured as more blocks are piled on top of it. This elegantly adds additional layers of security, backed by the combined computing power of the network.

To alter a transaction, an attacker would have to re-mine a given block all the way back to the blockchain head, keeping pace with the rate of new blocks being added by the network. The only sure way to alter the blockchain therefore would be to control over half the total computing power of the network. Thus Bitcoin represents an ever expanding apotheosis of encrypted security.

Part Three: The Cryptocurrencies Landscape

Here Franco traces bitcoin's origins back to early experiments in public key cryptography and blind signatures, as set out in documents such as the "Cryto Anarchist Manifesto" (May 1992).

He charts a course through innovations such as David Chaum's ecash, an untraceable payment system first mooted in 1982; Adam Back's Hashcash, which ingeniously added computational time and costs to spammers; through to the first published papers by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2008. This was followed by the launch of the bitcoin peer-to-peer network on January 3, 2009.

There is survey of some alt-coins that have proposed interesting changes, either technical or to the economics of bitcoin.

Litecoin (2011) uses a different proof of work algorithm to bitcoin and its block generation time of 2.5 minutes is shorter. Peercoin (2012) uses a hybrid proof-of-work/proof-of-stake system that requires less computing power, making it arguably a green alternative to bitcoin. Auroracoin (Feb 2014), was 50% pre-mined, so that half its monetary supply could be distributed among the population of Iceland.

Alt-coins, which are forks in bitcoin's open source code, can now be created on dedicated websites with just a few mouse clicks, notes Franco.

A section on the future applications looks at smart contracts that could in some cases substitute the legal governance: "interactions that today are governed by law could be governed in the future by digital contracts and cryptoledgers".

The most commonly cited example of smart property is the car. In this case the car's ownership is represented by a digital asset in the blockchain. The telematics system of the car is connected to the internet and can read the blockchain. It sees that a change of ownership has occurred and updates the public key of its owner accordingly. The new owner can open the car and start the engine by signing a message with his or her private key. This can be sent to the car via a wallet application in a smartphone.

More complex transactions are explored: the car could grant an address access for a limited period, say for a rental, or the car could update payment by instalments.

Other emerging bitcoin applications include digital bonds or digital shares; the next generation of micropayments and crowd-funding; autonomous agents that can operate Decentralised Autonomous Corporations and so on.

We are living though a technological revolution. Who knows what applications will dominate a decade from now? Bitcoin founder Satoshi's predictions made in 2009 are already looking very modest: "I would be surprised if 10 years from now we're not using electronic currency in some way..."

I have two so far and plan on purchasing more for friends in the near future. It really does help to take a few minutes each night to reflect on just 3 things you are grateful for. Imagine ending the day on a peaceful and positive note. And the artwork certainly helps if you need a little inspiration.

The journal itself is well constructed and well laid out. It does help to use a pencil or ballpoint pen instead of heavier ink type pens. Mine has bled through a bit so I took the advice of switching to my regular ballpoint.

Great for yourself or as a gift. I very highly recommend this journal.

Using the series of VBI elements derived, the authors study a number of frontier problems, including the impact response of bridges with elastic bearings, the dynamic response of curved beam to moving centrifugal forces, the stability and derailment of trains moving over bridges shaken by earthquakes, the impact response of two trains crossing on a bridge, the steady-state response of trains moving over elevated bridges, and so on.

A Treat to the Adventurous Souls!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sports/adventure biography. First of all, the format of the book is easy to follow with two narratives, one of Alex and one of the co-author, D. Robert. At first, I wondered why Alex chose this format as he already writes decently. Then, I realized this format provided a third person perspective for the readers to appreciate the gravity of some of the accomplishment. Alex's choice of co-author definitely was superb - I have read several D. Robert's books, always enjoyed them. Secondly, aside from the obvious (but still thrilling) climbing accomplishment/adventure, Alex's sense of humor really came through. The book was very entertaining to read! Finally, I think anyone who appreciates athleticism/adventure, climber or not (I have climbed but am not an avid climber), will enjoy this book for a lot of the "lessons" are universal. A side note, I really appreciate Alex's downplaying on those "lessons" - he doesn't overstate them, but really just tells a story and lets the readers decipher whatever apply to them. It is not "preachy", even though it still inspires the audience.

An invigorating & inspiring read!

Alone on the Wall is a phenomenal book from a phenomenal adventurer. I first learned of Alex Honnold's feats of climbing through the short film by the same name as this book. This book provides a deeper look into the journey that brought him to the public spotlight and the epic feats of adventuring he has completed since.

It's incredibly inspiring to read in detail these accounts of Alex's ascents, link-ups, and expeditions. I was pumped every day that I was reading the book & got in lots of hiking and gym climbing.

The book worked well with two authors. The narration alternates between italicized sections where Alex accounts his climbs first hand and the general text written by David Roberts that provides a third party perspective to the full spectrum of Alex's story. David also tied in key snippets of information about Alex from his climbing films, historical context for the climbing accomplishments, and enough technical explanation to allow even non-climbers to enjoy the narrative.

KINDLE READERS: Locations 3170-3252 are stunning photos! I was so gripped by the story I did not even notice the photos until reaching the end of the text, at which point I flipped slowly through them with mouth slightly agape.

FINAL TAKE: Highly recommended to all who want inspiration to elevate their dreams and continue pushing their personal adventures.

Alex "No Big Deal" is quietly Narcissistic. The book echos just how cool he is in his eyes... but it's just something I slightly expected. Not really captivated by his description of his love life or reading how he describes himself as an intelligent "genius" multiple times.

Expect awesome descriptions of climbs on very famous routes! But also expect to read about how awesome Alex is in first person POV.

About the Author
Howard G. Baetzhold is Rebecca Clifton Reade Professor of English Emeritus at Butler University in Indianapolis and John S. Tuckey Memorial Research Fellow at Elmira College Center for Mark Twain Studies at Quarry Farm. An advisory board member and contributor to the "Mark Twain Encyclopedia," he is currently an editor of "Tales and Sketches of the Middle Years" and "Tales and Sketches of the Later Years" for the Mark Twain Project. Joseph B. McCullough is Professor of English at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In addition to a number of articles on Mark Twain, he is the author of "Hamlin Garland," and editor of "Hamlin Garland's Tales of the Middle Border" and "Hamlin Garland's Son of the Middle Border."

In the decades since his death, many of Mark Twain's writings have been reorganized into common themes such as protests, speeches, short stories and sketches, and full works of fiction in larger volumes. A recent welcome addition to these is The Bible According to Mark Twain, which includes diaries of Adam, Eve, and other Old Testament characters, various speculations on what the imaginary Heaven might be like (including Captain Stormfield's), some autobiographical dictations, a few pieces that appear in print for the first time, and, of course, Letters From the Earth.
It also contains too many of the editor's notes that plague most of Twain's posthumous releases. Here, notes take up 50 of the book's first 260 pages (10 more are blank). Why do editors feel compelled to insert their version of Twain's autobiography before every entry? If they must share this information with readers, they can do so at the start or the end of the book, without interrupting Twain's far superior writing. Granted, some of the details are worth knowing: Twain read Paine's Age of Reason while piloting riverboats. This helped shape his views toward Christianity. But other statements are extremely irritating: "...we have omitted the five-and-a-half page attack on the concept of the virgin birth (mistakenly referred to as the immaculate conception) because that discussion is not closely related to the writings in this volume." Yes it is! Claims like this make me wonder what else is missing. The rest of Twain's writings on religion need a book of their own, WITHOUT the gratuitous editorial comments.

"From the beginning of time, whenever a king has lain dangerously ill, the priesthood and some part of the nation have prayed in unison that the king be spared to his grieving and anxious people (in case they were grieving and anxious, which was not usually the rule) and in no instance was their prayer ever answered. When Mr. Garfield lay near to death, the physicians and surgeons knew that nothing could save him, yet at an appointed signal all the pulpits in the United States broke forth with one simultaneous and supplicating appeal for the President's restoration to health. They did this with the same old innocent confidence with which the primeval savage had prayed to his imaginary devils to spare his perishing chief -- for that day will never come when facts and experience can teach a pulpit anything useful. Of course the President died, just the same."

Indispensable religious satire

Mark Twain promptly proves with this volume that he is, indeed, as the title states, "America's Master Satirist." Having grown up in a fundamentalist Presbyterian community, Twain knew his Bible well; and, like any thinking person, his beliefs and attitudes relating to it changed as he grew older, wiser, and more experienced. Although Twain - due to many factors, such as the death of several children and his wife and his failed investments - grew famously bitter towards the end of his life, his vision remained remarkably clear-headed, though clearly suffued with pessimism - indeed, his zest for the truth and absolute intolerance for mankind's accepted irrational beliefs became even more razor-sharp during this period. Although there are writings in this volume from all phases of Mark Twain's career, the majority of them do come from that latter period - a period in which, indeed, the exploration of these themes was the main facet of his writing. Included are such well-known items as the Diaries of Adam and Eve (as well as several other Old Testament characters), Captain Stormfield's Visit To Heaven (published here in full for the first time ever), and, of course, his masterpiece, Letters From The Earth. In these, and the other, oftentimes more obscure pieces, Twain burlesques and satarizes freely, calling mankind on both his steadfast taking to irrational and illogical beliefs, as well as on his sheer stupidity and gullibility. If one is looking for a satire along the lines of Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn, then this is DEFINITELY not the place to look; however, if you have a fondness, as I do, for the darker, more probing side of Twain, then this is a volume that you must most definitely pick up.

Who says it's not possible to be funny when you're angry?

The Bible According to Mark Twain gathers together a group of writings by the famous author that were either published years ago or not at all. The writings all deal with Mark Twain's intense study and understanding of the Bible. The book begins with some humorous ideas of what Adam's and Eve's diaries may have looked like during their first days together and then later after their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Twain is unable to comprehend how they could be punished for doing something bad (eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge) when they still had no conception of good and bad until they ate the apple. Later works detail some thoughts on Noah and the flood and the importance of flies. It was important to preserve the disease carriers. When Twain takes a walk through Heaven you discover halos, harps, and wings are just for show. And finally he finishes up with a scathing attack on the stupidity of mankind, pointing out that statements like, Thou Shall Not Kill, and committing genocide do not go together. Or how could man conceive of a Heaven as Heaven and leave out sexual intercourse? If sanity is dangerous to your health, don't read this book.

About the Author
Harry F. Wolcott (Ph.D. Stanford) taught at the University of Oregon, serving on both the faculties of education and anthropology. He authored several ethnographic texts that included his experiences among the Kwakiutl Indians of British Columbia and with the African Beer Gardens of Bulawayo, Rhodesia, as well on ethnographic method and on writing itself, with a focus on qualitative research. His publications included: Transforming Qualitative Data (SAGE 1994); Art of Fieldwork (2nd ed., Altamira Press 2005); Ethnography: A Way of Seeing (2nd ed., Altamira Press 2008); Writing Up Qualitative Research (3rd ed., SAGE 2009); Sneaky Kid and Its Aftermath: Ethics and Intimacy in Fieldwork (Altamira 2002), and Ethnography Lessons: A Primer (Left Coast Press, 2010).

Brilliant work and inspiring

A classic of the genre, makes the case for seeing data through the lens of good writing and a good story. Controversial in that he dismisses concerns about validity or generalizability ... which is okay with me. If you're in the middle of a long research slog, this will inspire you to good, fascinated work.

Fantastic study skills guide. My kids were lucky enough to live where the authors lives. They took her course in middle school and used the techniques through college.I have one child that is more of a visual learner and one auditory. This book gives you techniques to use all types of learning styles ( auditory, visual and kinesthetic) and the ability to use multiple styles for comprehensive learning. Just bought this book for my niece, that started 6th grade this school year.

This is by far the best of the study guide books I've acquired over the years for my daughter. She (well, we're still not quite there !!!) lost the previous edition but I'm more than happy to purchase this latest edition. What's so valuable about the approach is that it sets out multiple techniques - using clear language and charts - to accomplish a particular goal be it taking notes, memorizing material and so on. I tell her to quickly review the options then select the approach that she believes works best for HER. (By the way, she's having to buy the new book herself for I only purchase the first item and if it is lost then it's up to her to replace it.)

He is frequently invited to speak at big data–related conferences. He is passionate about building new products, big data analytics, and machine learning.

Over the last 20 years, Mohammed has successfully led the development of several innovative technology products from concept to release. Prior to joining Glassbeam, he was the founder of TrustRecs.com, which he started after working at IBM for five years. Before IBM, he worked in a number of hi-tech start-ups, leading new product development.

Mohammed has a master's of business administration from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master's of computer applications from RCC, Gujarat University, India.

Good (but very basic) book. More breath than depth

I liked the book. it nice and simple and good for beginners.

One issue I found is that this book covers the the entire spark eco-system (spark core, spark sql, spark streaming, mllib) in a very brief way. it doesn't go deep into any of the topics. This makes it very similar to the spark programming guide on the web which also adopts a similar pattern.

What would have been nice if the author would have gone deep into spark-core. Upon reading this book, it didn't teach me anything more than the spark programming guide

This book aims to provide a “...concise and easy-to-understand tutorial for big data and Spark”. How does it fare?

Spark is increasing the tool of choice for big data processing, being much faster than Hadoop’s MapReduce. After putting Spark into a big data context, the book aims to cover Spark’s core library, together with its more specialized libraries for Streaming, Machine Learning, SQL, and Graphing.

The book is aimed at developers that are new to Spark, some general background programming knowledge required, but little else.

Chapter 1 Big Data Technology Landscape

This chapter opens with a discussion about the current big data age, with data as the lifeblood of organizations, and growing exponentially. The standard 3Vs definition of big data is explored (velocity, variety, volume). Traditional relational database management systems (RDBMS) are unable to process these large volumes in a timely manner – this is where the scalability of big data systems comes into its own.

Next, the chapter discusses some technologies that are either used with Spark, or Spark competes with. The first technology is Hadoop, this is fault tolerant and scalable, and runs on commodity hardware. The three major components of Hadoop are discussed: YARN (Yet Another Resource Negotiator), MapReduce (distributed processing model), and HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File System). Spark is increasingly being used in place of MapReduce owning to its faster speed. The section briefly discusses Hive, a data warehouse with a SQL like interface, Spark SQL is expected to supersede Hive on many systems.

The chapter continues with a look at some common binary formats for serializing (storing on disk) big data, and their pros and cons. Specifically Avro, Thrift, Protocol Buffers, and SequenceFile are examined. Next, some column storage formats, which have performance advantages when the client requires a subset of columns, were briefly discussed, namely: RCFile, ORC, and Parquet.

Then a brief overview of messaging systems is provided, together with the advantages of having a layer of abstraction between producers and consumers. Specifically, Kafka and ZeroMQ are discussed with the aid of useful supporting diagrams.

NoSQL is then examined. The various types of NoSQL databases have different aims to the traditional RDBMS, typically trading Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability (ACID) for scalability and flexibility. The specific NoSQL databases briefly discussed are Cassandra and HBase. I sometimes wonder if it is meaningful to group NoSQL databases together. Is it meaningful to divide sports into Football and NoFootball? Are all the NoFootball sports meaningful as a group?

The chapter ends with a look at some distributed SQL query engines, these do not use MapReduce batch jobs, and are thus more oriented to interactive querying. The engines briefly examined are: Impala, Presto, and Apache Drill.

This chapter provides an excellent overview of big data technology. It should be noted there are many more technologies than described, but the examples given are sufficient to explain the topic areas. This is possibly the best backgrounder to big data I’ve read.

The discussions are very well written, concise and clear, with helpful diagrams, and no wasted words. There’s a good flow between the topics, and useful links between chapters. There are website links for further information. These traits apply to all the chapters in the book.

This book aims to provide a “...concise and easy-to-understand tutorial for big data and Spark”, and clearly succeeds. The book is exceptionally well written. Helpful explanations, diagrams, practical step-by-step walkthroughs, annotated code, inter-chapter links, and website links abound throughout.

The book is aimed at developers that are new to Spark, and explains concepts from the beginning. If you work through the book you should become competent in the use of Spark, there is much more to learn of course, but this book gives a solid foundation in both core Spark and its major specialized libraries: Streaming, Machine Learning, SQL, and Graphing.

The book is based on workshops given by the author, and clearly the feedback from these has been useful in creating this book, since it seems to have answered all the questions I had.

This book provides everything you need to know to get started with Spark, explained in an easy-to-follow manner. If you want to learn Spark, buy this book. Highly recommended

Well Organized and informative book

This book is a very well written definitive overview of Spark. This is a great book for those who want to learn about spark but dont know where to start from.
Fundamentals are very well explained in the book for developers who are new to spark. It starts with great overview of big data technology and helps in building basics and then moves on to explore more advanced topics. The book covers Spark core and its specialized add-on libraries too. This book also contains a plenty of sample examples which are really useful. Even if you are new to the subject this book has enough information to get a developer started on spark projects.
In short this book is really well organized, very informative and easy to follow. Highly recommended .
