Good hardcore Gen 3/4 Engine Book

In the late-'90s, when I began covering the LS1 engine and it's truck engine siblings for magazines, there were no good technical books, other than Factory Service Manuals, on these engines. What a difference a decade makes. Today, there are many books on the Gen 3/4 engines, most good and some bad.

This book, How to Build and Modify GM LS-Series Engines is one of the good ones...in spite of one of its little problems being the title itself. This book, by Texas Speed and Performance technician and ls1tech.com moderator, Joseph Potak, is really about how to properly assemble a high-performance street or racing Gen 3/4 engine. Content on modifications is pretty limited to engine hard parts and there's little or nothing on camshaft choices, headers, superchargers, nitrous oxide systems or other parts with which you'd modify an LS-series engine. This "problem" really isn't much of an issue-I look at it more as a typographical error in the title than anything else-because this book is a useful reference to anyone, especially DIY's, who are blueprinting and assembling a high-performance Gen 3/4 engine.

The book covers short block parts identification, machine work, short block assembly and upper end assembly and it does it with more detail than other books on the Gen 3s and 4s which I've reviewed. That is a good thing because the Gen 3/4 engine builders in the hobby are hungry for information. This book feeds that appetite.
On the modification front, there is useful information on aftermarket crankshafts, connecting rods, pistons and cylinder heads but, again, the information is limited and that limiting is a good thing. It allows the depth to which Potak goes in covering machine work and assembly.

Another aspect of this book which makes it a good read-or maybe I should say: a good look-is its photography. Imagery is important in a how-to book such as this. How to Build and Modify GM LS-Series Engines abounds with large photos which are well lit and show clear details of what's covered in the text.

The book does have a few quirks, such as slang terminology. Use of the hobby's general term "power adder" is common. They're not "power adders." They are "superchargers", "turbochargers" or "nitrous oxide injection systems". The strange phrase "oil journal clearance" is used for main an rod "bearing clearance"-what's an "oil journal, anyway? The word "larger" is used in discussions of camshaft profiles but more aggressive cams are not "larger". They may have longer durations and higher lifts but the cams are the same size.

The book also suffers a little because of its design. Apparently, to the book's Art Director, trendy looking pages trump the need to supply good content to readers. While the photos in this book are quite good and a cut above some books on the same subject from Motorbooks' competitors, many pages are designed with images on the left and, on the right, captions, set in teeny-tiny type, afloat on expansive white spaces. The captions are hard to read and the white space is a waste. Sheesh. Fill that space with more information on Gen 3/4 engines!

Executive summary: yeah, the book as a few design problems and a slightly misleading title but the meat and potatoes of How to Build and Modify GM LS-Series Engines is good stuff. This book now has a spot on my Gen 3/4 bookshelf.

Excellent book

If you work on or do mods on your LSx engine, then this book is a must-have, regardless of whether you're a raw novice, a seasoned pro, or a tech who works on these engines for a living. The book has substantial content fitted into the standard Motorbooks format/size, and contains many, many color pictures with detailed explanations and procedures that do not appear in the GM Service Manual. This book can be read either way: from cover to cover, or at random pages, or even backwards; it is layed out very well. The edge of the pages have a color coded section "tab" so you can quickly thumb to the section of interest. I can't put the book down, good job!!

Highly Suggested Reading for Any LSx Enthusiast!

I bought this book to simply brush up on the basics of LSx building and was pleasantly surprised that it goes much farther into this platform than that! Mr. Potak included a multitude of images that should help even the newest of LSx enthusiasts jump into modifying this powerful engine series with a good plan and the knowledge needed to complete their project safely and efficiently! I highly recommend this book for any LSx powered vehicle owner! Thanks Mr. Potak!

Misleading and low-quality.

I was pretty excited about picking up this cookbook, as I love my Instant Pot. It was low-priced, and advertised itself for two, and I was putting together an order and it 'fit' my budget, so I didn't read much about it after I saw it had good reviews.

When I received the cookbook, I was very disappointed. First, the quality of the book is poor. It's a basic paperback, and all of the recipes look like they were typed into Microsoft Word. There are no pictures, no discussions of the recipes. Just the name, the settings, the ingredients, and a very brief set of instructions.

In addition, the recipes are NOT for two people. A Pot Roast recipe that calls for a 3-lb roast? A rib recipe that calls for 5 pounds of baby back ribs? A 4-lb pork butt for pulled pork? No, these are just normal recipes, with no scaling to be for two at all.

And a final insult, the Sesame Chicken on the cover of the cookbook isn't even a recipe in the book itself!

You would do better looking up recipes online, this cookbook is barely functional and very misleading.

I would not recommend buying this book

I eagerly ordered this cook as scaling recipes down to two is at times challenging. I received the book yesterday. I found that all the recipes are for more than two, most for four but some for 6 or more. What's with the misleading book title? Then the cover looked interesting but not to be found in the book. Another misleading aspect. Finally some of the recipies are missing steps. I would not recommend buying this book

It's okay, and probably has some great recipes, but I am certainly disappointed. I was hoping for recipes for 2 people, like it states in the book title. Every recipe in here is for 4 or more servings.

About the Author

Ian Morris is the Jean and Rebecca Willard Professor of Classics and Professor of History at Stanford University, where he teaches large lecture courses on ancient empires and Greek history. He is either the author or the editor of nine books on ancient history and archaeology, and directs a major archaeological excavation in Sicily. His latest book, Why the West Rules … For Now will appear in 2010. He has lectured at universities across America and Europe, and r appeared on television on the History Channel, Discovery Channel, and A&E Channel.

Barry B. Powell is the Halls-Bascom Professor of Classics Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where in his long career he was well known as a teacher of large lecture classes in ancient civilization and myth and for seminars on Homer. He has lectured in many countries and is the author of the bestselling Classical Myth (6th edition, 2008), widely used in college courses. He is best known as the author of Homer and the Origin of the Greek Alphabet (1991), which argues that the Greek alphabet was invented in order to record the poems of Homer. With Ian Morris he published the internationally admired A New Companion to Homer (1997). The 2nd edition of his popular introductory text Homer appeared in 2007, and he has written numerous other books, articles, screenplays, a novel, poetry, and a mock-epic The War at Troy: A True History (2006). He Recently, he appeared on the History Channel special Troy: The True Story (2005). His study Writing: Theory and History of the Technology of Civilization (2008) establishes a scientific terminology for studying the history of writing.

An intelligent and engaging textbook

Textbooks have, deservedly, a bad reputation. Morris and Powell have written a textbook that is also a pleasure to read. This truly fine book covers the full range of material, but with style and flair. It is also well illustrated and makes very effective use of original source material. And their use of what they call "the Greek problem" -- how to organize social life "withough God or gods to reveal" a pattern -- is extremely effective. There are a number of good overview introductory books out there on the Greeks, but none better. The only drawback is a fairly hefty pricetag.

Why look (much) further?

This is an absolutely excellent textbook on the Ancient Greeks. One would be hard pressed to find a better, more thorough or enjoyable accounting of the Greeks under one cover. What really sets this book apart to me though is that it is rarely dry - history does not need to be so! and Morris & Powell render their history of the Greeks beautifully - their narrative is both compelling written and clear (a beautiful marriage indeed). The narrative is not simply the authors' voices either - the text is judiciously interspersed with primary texts of all types. So, in sum - this is a superb book that deserves to be on your shelf (read with enjoyment).

This autobiography, which was originally published in 1972, the year Robinson died, is not about baseball: it's about the deep commitment that Robinson made to achieve justice for himself and all Americans. He recalls his years at UCLA, where he became the school's first four-letter athlete and met his future wife, Rachel. With the advent of WWII he was drafted into the army, became a lieutenant and was court-martialed for refusing to move to the back of a bus. He was honorably discharged. He played for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues until he was recruited by Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1947 Robinson broke the color line in the major leagues and suffered terrible abuse for doing so. He discusses his relationships with the sports figures he admired, like Rickey and teammate Pee Wee Reese, and also recalls his run-ins with those he did not like, such as Dodger owner Walter O'Malley, who was "viciously antagonistic," and sportswriter Dick Young, a "racial bigot." Much of the book, written with freelancer Duckett, focuses on Robinson's political involvements after his career ended in 1956 and his friendships with such diverse characters as Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, William Buckley and Nelson Rockefeller. The most wrenching episodes in the book deal with Jackie Jr., who overcame his heroin addiction only to be killed in an automobile accident at age 24 in 1971. Touches the surface of a complex man

I was interested in reading "I Never Had It Made" after seeing the movie "42". There are more than a few biographies about Jackie Robinson, but I wanted to hear the story from the man himself. The first third of the book is quite riveting, as Mr. Robinson recounts his story of breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball. The story slows down once Mr. Robinson transitioned from baseball to private life with some highs and lows. Particularly heartbreaking is reading about his relationship with his son, how his son became addicted to drugs, eventually overcame his addiction, and passed away in a tragic car accident just as his life was beginning to turn around. It's clear that Mr. Jackie Robinson is a principled man, and fought for civil rights in the battleground of business and politics. There were several famous political figures he called out in his book as people he couldn't support, but didn't elaborate as to why. I would have liked to know more specifics about his view of these people.

Interesting insight

This book provided interesting insight to the thinking of a man who made a mark on American history.

We frequently hear about Jackie Robinson as the baseball icon who broke racial barriers in a segregated institution. We seldom hear of his many contributions to the business and political world. His autobiography gives personal insight to his life and the impact he had in the socio-political arena.

Jackie was an outspoken advocate of his personal beliefs. He took on many challenges and sometimes suffered the consequences of those struggles. The reader gets to experience Jack Robinson as a dynamic individual who is sometimes bitter, sometimes apologetic, sometimes sexist, sometimes full of pain, and sometimes proud. He discusses his views, his motivations, his reasoning, and his failures.

The book reads as if the manuscript was typed verbatim from a tape recorded story of Jackie's life. As times, it lacks sufficient historical perspective that would provide greater information and understanding for the reader.

One of the short comings of the book is the lack of footnotes. Jackie refers to a variety of documents including newspaper articles, but fails to provide footnotes so that the reader can refer to and research the source. Footnotes provide an excellent tool to look for and obtain more information on the subject. Due to the fact that there are many such references, they should have been available. It would have also been a plus to see copies of some of the letters written to Jackie by Rockefeller, Nixon, and other historical figures that are discussed at length in the book.

I would have also like to know more about Jackie's early years, such as, the schools he attended and how he entered UCLA. I am sure that there was more to his entry into the UC system than merely filling out an application. There is also limited information about this mother and his siblings, or whether his father ever attempted to contact his famous and outspoken son.

Although, we hear from the man himself, upon finishing the book, I felt as if the work was incomplete. It feels more like a work in progress than a finished memoir of a man who attempted and accomplished so much.

Highly Recommended

There have been a number of instances in which I have found autobiographies to come across as rather disjointed, varying in tone by page and by chapter, particularly when it comes to those co-authored by individuals who are not themselves subjects of the stories within. To what extent this is the result of editorializing or revisionism on the part of either subject or co-author, I never know for certain. With "I Never Had It Made," I felt that, while I could not personally discern any significant difference between the flesh and blood individual and the form apparent in the written word from any first- or second-hand experience (being born 15 years after his passing and all), I suspected this to be a natural extension of Jackie Robinson's persona. As a ballplayer, Jackie endured countless threats, taunts, and much worse, for the sake of Branch Rickey's "noble experiment." As a man, Jackie is incredible effusive when it comes to his on-the-field achievements as member of a World Series-winning Brooklyn Dodgers team and well-deserving inductee to the Baseball Hall of Fame. If you are looking for the story of Jackie Robinson's life, i.e. the chronology of events from birth to baseball, success and fame, to activist and icon status, well, this is probably not that book. What is perhaps most striking, in my opinion, is the manner in which the tone shifts repeatedly from Jackie's humble perspective as a son/husband/father/soldier/ballplayer/businessman/activist, deflecting praise for achievements that seem to have come about as a natural extension of his determination and effort to prove himself worthy in seemingly every personal endeavor, to his stream-of-consciousness sort of reflections on the choices (and admitted mistakes) he made, often against the will of the pigheaded masses, or those closest to him. What comes through most in this book is evidently Jackie's voice. While Jackie does not sugar-coat things, he does not tend to dwell on past transgressions against him. While he does not proclaim justice to have been faithfully served in his lifetime, nor wildly optimistic sentiments about the likelihood that it shall have come to be upheld in his children's, he consistently emphasizes the beliefs and values that have guided him throughout a life that, although extraordinary in its accomplishments, is remarkably ordinary in its narrative of struggle and overcoming of one's obstacles. That is not to detract from the transcendent stature of Jackie Robinson's legacy, which he earned in spite of 'never having it made.' Rather, in much the same way he enlightens readers to the differences of opinion he had with the likes of Dr. King and Malcolm X, or common ground he shared with Nixon and Rockefeller, Jackie does not shy away from contradiction, and embodies the message of Matthew 5:14 ("You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.") that has so frequently been misappropriated by politicians and evangelists. If Jackie Robinson is to be considered a shining example of American ideals (and I firmly believe that he is), a flawed but beautiful fusion of both conservative and liberal values that seems particularly poignant these days, then I believe that this book should be as widely shared and read as humanly possible.

This is a terrific publication, if your into tube audio this is the book you need. I have volume one as well. Both books are really well set out, going from basic electrical theory to how tubes and associated circuits work. Igor Popovich has an excellent way of explaining even the more complex designs. I have built some of the tube amplifiers from these books with fantastic results. I could not speak more highly of this book and would recommend both publications to anyone who has an interest in the wonderful world of tube audio. Brett Edwards

I own many of the "new age" books on tubes and this is the best series so far

This book is a worthy companion to volume one. The author discusses classical tube circuits while adding new-age "tweaks" to peak amplifier performance. I've already purchased the third volume and own about half of his training DVDs. I own many of the "new age" books on tubes and this is the best series so far.

About the Author
Martin Sixsmith was born in Cheshire and educated at Oxford, Harvard and the Sorbonne. From 1980 to 1997 he worked for the BBC, as the Corporation's correspondent in Moscow, Washington, Brussels and Warsaw. From 1997 to 2002 he worked for the British Government as Director of Communications. He is now a writer, presenter and journalist. His previous books are The Litvinenko File, Moscow Coup: The Death of the Soviet System and two novels, Spin and I Heard Lenin Laugh.

Different book?

I just finished reading the 18 reader reviews of "The Lost Child of Philomena", before writing my own review of the book. And I can't figure out if everybody reviewing this book read the same book. About half of the reviewers referred to the book as mostly about Philomena, an Irish "Magdalene", torn apart from her child after raising him for three years in a home for unwed mothers in Ireland. The others appeared to have read a different book -and the same one I read - which is mostly about the child, Michael Hess, who was adopted by an American couple in the mid-1950's. The story is mostly about HIS life in the US and his growing up with the angst that adopted children sometimes have about their origins, as well as his coming to terms about his sexuality and life in college and law school and life in Washington DC as an official at the Reagen and HW Bush administrations and then at the Republican National Committee. Only at the end were Martin Sixsmith and Philomena brought back into the story.

Okay, that's not a problem for the purchaser and reader of the book, now retitled "Philomena: A Mother, A Son, and A 50 Year Search", as long as s/he knows in advance that's NOT what the book is about. This book is about 75% about Michael, his life, and his family - which IS very interesting - and about 25% about Irish shaming of young pregnant women, the eventual "selling" of their babies, and Philomena's search for her given-up child. I am going to see the movie, starring Dame Judi Dench this weekend, and I'll bet that the movie is more about Philomena than her child.

I point this out because the movie marketers seem to have taken a book - more about the son - and turned it around and made the movie more about the mother, and then tried to rebrand the book to align with the movie. Either that, or the early reviewers were reading an entirely different book than the rest of us, a book that WAS mostly about the mother and her search.

I also couldn't quite tell if the book was fiction or non-fiction. If it was non-fiction, then a whole lot of people know what they were saying 50 years ago. Sixsmith writes in the afterward that he interviewed a lot of the characters alive at that point, but then he also put characters together and changed some names. All in all, I didn't think the book was particularly well-written. I'm hoping the movie is better.

Enlightening and frustrating but so well done

Philomena Lee represents thousands of women who might otherwise have lived fruitful lives and their children might have otherwise given Ireland educators, musicians, scientists, doctors, writers, productive happy people. The Catholic Church took all that away from its own country that supported it and was too loyal. The nuns and priests again were above the law, and were responsible for many innocent people living through tortuous frustration, thinking they had done something wrong, they were being punishes for their "sins." Young Michael/Andrew has memories of his mother, but feels as though he never belonged anywhere. His life may have been much different had the nuns at the Abbey treated Philomena with humaneness and respect, and maybe just a little love for God's "image and likeness." This search for the son and mother was well researched and very well written. I couldn't leave the book alone. I had to remind myself often that this is a true story. I could picture the roads in that part of Ireland and the old ruins since I've recently been to Tipperary. Now I want to return just to see the places Martin Sixsmith writes about. I also need to research some of the Nixon-Reagan years as this will help me understand how Michael lived during those conservative, stringent times. The photographs in the book are impressive. Thank you, Mr. Sixsmith, for including them.

The adoption process run in Ireland by Catholic Authorities sold children for money, without regard for the women and their children, effectively exploiting Mothers and their children whose lives were forever affected by the inhumane deception and cruelty - State & Church benefited financially. Secrecy, lies and illegal practices were the order of the day at Sean Ross Abbey fully supported by strong political governmental connections.

"The Lost Child of Philomena Lee" by Michael Sixsmith is a tragically true story. At first I hesitated to buy it, 451 pages long, but once I started to read I couldn't put it down. Mike/Anthony Lee searched for years. He felt a strong connection with his Irish roots and hoped one day his Mother, Philomena Lee, might find him.

Women victims in these Prison type Religious Institutions served as slaves and used to breast feed their children (cost saving for the Convent) and then when no longer needed thrown out without any guidance, counseling or meaningful support, which made way for more inmates. It's a wonder that any of these women and their children survived.

Dr. Alastair Carruthers, M.A., B.M.,B.Ch, FRCP(LON), FRCPC
Dr. Alastair Carruthers is a Cosmetic Dermasurgeon who operates his own clinical practice (Carruthers Dermatology Centre Inc.) in Vancouver, BC. He is also a Clinical Professor of Dermatology with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC).

During his 20 years of practice, Dr. Carruthers has made several major contributions to the field of dermatology. Foremost among these was the use of the BOTOX® procedure in cosmetic applications, a discovery he made with his wife, Dr. Jean Carruthers, in 1987. Since this time, they have been at the forefront of BOTOX® research, development and education, publishing numerous articles using their data. Today, BOTOX®, which inhibits nerve impulses in muscles that cause everything from frown lines and wrinkles to sweating, is the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in the world.

Dr. Carruthers has also made significant advances in the area of Tissue Augmentation. These materials, both temporary and permanent, are used to lift and support the structures beneath the skin. In 1998 Dr. Carruthers was the first dermatologist in North America to begin injecting Artecoll. Through the extensive research performed in their Vancouver based facility, Drs. Carruthers continue to have articles published and lecture extensively on these subjects.

With over 100 published articles to his credit, Dr. Carruthers is a member of the Editorial Board of “Dermatologic Surgery”. He is also a member of several national and international associations, including the American Dermatology Association and the Canadian Dermatology Association, where he served as President from 1998 to 1999. In addition, he has been elected Vice President of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.

Dr. Jean Carruthers is a Cosmetic Surgeon and a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC).

Dr. Carruthers has lectured worldwide on a variety of subjects pertaining to cosmetic ophthalmology, including the cosmetic use of the BOTOX® procedure, which she co-founded with her husband, Dr. Alastair Carruthers, in 1987. Since this time, they have remained at the forefront of BOTOX® research, development and education, publishing numerous articles using their data. She is an International Editor for such publications as Dermatologic Surgery, the Journal of Cosmetic Laser Surgery and the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery.

I have the previous edition and this one has many more updated topics. Dr. Carruthers is especially good at outlining safety concerns and the creative part of injecting. Illustrations are excellent.
