WOW! Another briliiant YA paranormal from an epic author!

Can I just say WOW! This is fast become my most favorite series, and Patti Larsen is definitely one of the best new finds of this year. In Witch Hunt, Syd is finally fitting in and making friends. But that doesn't mean she's human. And a scary group of witch hunters knows exactly what she is... and how to kill her!

To make matters more complicated, she finally has a guy who really likes her. A sexy football player even! But what about the even sexier witch-boy who stole this readers' heart in book 1? Yeah, it's not so simple for Syd. Hey Syd, I can make this real easy for you hon, PICK THE SEXY WITCH!

Can she fight the evil forces trying to destroy her family AND juggle two sexy guys with complicated relationships? You just have to read this next installment to find out. Can't wait for the next book! Good thing Ms. Larsen writes faster than most people read! This is a MUST READ for anyone who loves paranormal books about witches, magic and romance.

Another amazing Syd Hayle Adventure!

Another amazing Syd Hayle adventure! I can't get enough of this girl. She's snarky, loving and has a knack for not following directions. The snafu's she gets into this round really had me gripping my chair in absolute terror for her.

The Chosen of the Light are after her, especially the creepy Demetrius, who wants to recruit Syd for his demented faction that cleanses the earth of evil. He considers Syd's family as tainted, but since there is something more malevolent going on that distracts the coven from dealing with him, he gets widely ignored, which is a huge mistake.

Syd seems to find herself in tons of situations where her magic, still not under complete control, seems to attract trouble and fantastical things out nowhere. The school bully isn't even immune and she, Susanne, gets possessed by some unknown entity that wants to do nothing more than drain everyone dry around them--magic, blood and all. It really had everyone on their toes because no one knows what's going on for most of the book, which sort of freaks everyone out, including me. Definitely spine tingling.

Absolutely loved this installment of the Hayle Coven Series. It shows Syd growing more and more in tune with her magic, teases us with the handsome Quaid's subtle affections, pulls Syd's friends into the thick of the mess plaguing the coven and keeps you rooting for Syd the whole way through. Excellent series.

If I thought the first book in this series was an absolute must read, then "Witch Hunt" must be something like a double must read!

Six months along and Sydlynn Hayle is still in the same town and the same school but now has a circle of friends and even a boyfriend. She is learning to use her magical powers, enjoying her life with her friends and going to parties like any normal teenage girl.

One of the parties turns into a disaster when an ancient power arises to start feeding on kids with latent magical powers. When the mean cheerleader Suzanne are possessed, and town folk and coven members start disappearing, Syd's coven has to step in and do something about it. That is when things get out of hand.

Syd's crazy grandmother, who can only be subdued by a constant supply of chocolates and tequila, continues with her antics in this book, entertaining the reader to no end. And let's not forget another contributor who adds to the magic of this story - the silver Persian cat, Sassafras, who is really something else imprisoned in the body of a cat.

Once I started reading Witch Hunt, I simply couldn't put it down. The nonstop excitement, action and drama kept me sitting on the edge of my seat. As I had become very fond of many of the characters when reading the first book in the series, "Family Magic", I was really concerned that something bad may befall one of them during this story.

The dialogue is extremely well written but most enjoyable, and often hilarious, is the inner dialogue and thoughts of the main character, Syd. When she thinks of the bad guy as somebody with two god-complexes and a serious multiple personality disorder, I was shouting with laughter.

Patti Larsen brilliantly combines just the right amount of action, warmth and humor in this book - something which I always admire greatly in authors. I would strongly recommend this young adult novel to readers of all ages. Once again this gifted writer has given her readers a beautiful, warm-hearted and very suspenseful 5 star read to enjoy. Indispensible, undecipherable?

Among those in my acquaintance who are fond of Celtic art, George Bain's Celtic Art is the one which most buy first. I did. Then I read it and found that some of his instructions (particularly for creating knotwork) seem totally off-the-wall and totally indecipherable. However, for some reason, he seemed to be the only one who has ever come up with a way to recreate impossibly complex knotwork panels, and do more than just plain fretted knotwork. Fear not, Dear Reader! If you follow his instructions, practice the designs as he shows them, you will ultimately discover what he is trying to say. And when you do, the entire world of complex, bewildering and magical knotwork will open up to you.
However, knotwork is not the only type of art that Bain covers in this book. He also analyzes fretwork (mazes), spirals and zoomorphic forms (animal and human forms which can sometimes even be interlaced), as well. These, comprise the entire corpus of form used in the great books of Celtic and Anglo-Saxon art which were created in the 6th through 8th centuries.
Let me also put a good word in for Bain's survey of Hiberno/Anglo-Saxon calligraphy as well, in which he assembles many of the fanciful letter forms for which this form of writing is known.
I do own all of Aidan Meehan's books (and also recommend them), but if you can only afford to buy one book, buy this one. Then, as you can afford others, branch out into Meehan (and even Bain's son, Iain has written a book on knotwork!), and begin purchasing surveys of the Books of Kells and Lindisfarne so that you can study from the true masters.

Beginning to Advanced Celtic Pattern Construction

Not too long ago I got the idea for a series of paintings with a celtic-medieval themed look. This book was one of the two books on celtic designs I bought. The type of patterns shown are very diverse and range from simple borders, to spirals, zoomorphs (animal-designs), calligraphy to examination of designs from Lindisfarne and the Book of Kells. It is also the most extensive of any of the books on this subject that I've seen. The only drawback is that the method for constructing these designs is not easy. As one earlier reviewer stated, the main method is to set up a grid pattern, draw out every line then erase the ones not needed. There are other books with simpler, better step-by-step details for constructing celtic designs. However, no other single book covers such a wide range as this one. It also covers a lot of complex designs and shows how to recreate them that no other celtic pattern books demonstrate. Quite a lot of the history of these designs is covered too. For anyone who can only afford one book on this subject this one will be all they'll ever need.

Good intro to Celtic Art

I can't add much more than the last previewer. But it is a good introduction to Celtic Art and patterns, plus he covers its history and shows you how to even difficult patterns. Drawing Celtic Artwork is not easy, a gifted artist and craftsman Bain makes it look easy but its not. Howeverf if you practice the basic patterns you can get pretty good at it in a reasonable period of time. I have several of Aidan Meehan's books and this one is by far the best for beginners imho. Use Meehans works when you can replicate a good many of the patterns found here.
It is also a fine resource for the more elaborate patterns which are not covered very well in other works. Many of these patterns can be transferred to leather, clay etc, you name it.
Overall if you only get one book on Celtic Art get this one and with a bit of practice your effort will be rewarded.

Danger Danger Danger!!

The first reviewer must be the author himself. This book is for someone with a death wish. Quotations below are from the book.

First, the author makes no attempt whatsoever to discuss the legalities of silencers. Silencers are legal in 36 U.S. States and a BATF Form 1 must be filed and a $200 making tax must be paid to the Dept. of Justice, BATF & E. in Martinsburg, WV. Only after the approved tax paid Form 1 is received from BATF can an individual begin to build a legal silencer otherwise you are subject to a $250,000 fine and 10 years in Federal Prison for an unregestered NFA weapon.

Secondly, the silencers designs are no where near military grade not even for a 3rd world country making improvised weapons in the midst of a civil war. They are circa 1970's baffle technology.

Far more important & worse, the materials specifed are grossly unsafe.

For example, the .223 silencer design starts with chainlink fence post for the outer tube. No sane individual would ever use seamed tubing for a silencer that is required to contain the pressures associated with a center fire cartridges let alone a tubing that has NO structural rating whatsoever. In addition, the wall of such tubing is too thin to endure the heat that must be dissapated by the silencer. Heat plus high pressure, well we've all chewed bubblegum, and blown bubbles. In addition, the tubing is galvanized and a structually safe weld cannot be made on galvanized material without removal of the galvanized coating.

The author specifies soft automotive freeze plugs for the baffles.

Next the author specifies "special hole punching ammo" to bore the baffles. This ammo is made, in the case of the .223 silencer by taking a standard .223 cartridge and removing the projectile "with pliers" then dumping the powder out, "raking it into a line cheech & chong style", dividing the powder into fourths and placing one forth of the powder back into the case, reinsterting the projectile "and crimping it in place with pliers". Then the silencer is installed on the rifle, wrapped in a towel, and the round is fired "into a block of wood" so as to drill the silencer concentric to the bore axis, or kill the builder with shrapnel, flip a coin.

To make matters even worse, the author specifies 2.5" muffler pipe (seamed non structual) for a .50 BMG silencer!!

A Lincoln "Buzz Box" is the welder of choice for silencer construction.

The book is not even usefull as reference material, best to stick with the series by Alan C. Paulson for a technical reference. There are far better examples on the internet of quality designs along with the legal guidelines neccessary for building a silencer.

Welcome to Club Fed!

The author clearly has a cognitive disconnect between "military grade" & "field expedient." The latter is the correct description for the instructions presented within this book. While the author does offer disclaimers about "don't do this w/o the proper tax stamp," the overall presentation of the content seems quite targeted at the eventual visitor to "Club Fed" (prison.)

Overall, I'd have to say the cover price on this overgrown pamphlet is at least $10 too high. About 1/8th of the book is devoted to trying to teach you how to weld (& failing at that goal.) So the actual content regarding silencer construction is significantly *less* than the page count would lead you to expect. Ultimately, you can find about 60% of the content of this book on the web with haphazard searching, and diligent cruising of silencer forums will net you 80%, & in greater detail than provided here. And if you don't already know how to weld, the information in this book isn't sufficient to get you started, so why waste the pages on it, if not merely to pad out the page count?

My original opinion below from when this item 1st appeared on Amazon has outdated pricing, but you get the idea. Like a train wreck, my morbid curiosity finally overcame my good sense & I just *had* to see what this thing was like. What a waste...

Do the math: $15 for 65 pages [that's right! Only 65 pages!] vs. $35 for 424 pages for vol. 1 of Alan Paulson's Silencer History and Performance (c'mon Alan, when are you going to release vol.3? I'm waiting!.. :) ) That works out to 23cents a page for this title, vs. less than 8cents a page for a book that provides the reader with an in depth historical background and scientific testing of silencer design, performance and construction. There's just no comparison: spend the extra $20 and do a little more reading before you embark down the convoluted and federally-regulated path of silencer construction! Get a subscription to Home Shop Machinist while you're at it, so you'll have some exposure to the skills necessary before you try to make your own silencer from raw materials...

I wonder if Mr. Knows-All-There-Is-To-Know, the previous reviewer, ever went to the trouble of building and testing the designs in this book that he denigrates, or if he was too busy trashing books about these and other tactically useful suppressor designs, while at the same time writing glowing reviews under other names about the pop can and other improvised models, not to mention posting fraudulent reviews of other books while IMPERSONATING another reviewer who has ONLY reviewed this title and the other title by this author, and in doing so always squeezing in a line about how people should "search the web" for silencer designs, a set of search terms that Uncle Sam almost certainly has Google tracking for them.

To top that off, several months after posting this "review" of this title, Mr. Knows-It-All also posted afterthought reviews of three other "reference" titles under this same username, posting all three on the SAME DAY. This is a painfully transparent attempt at establishing credibility, and there can be little doubt as to who he works for.

When something becomes a lightning rod, you know it has to be good. Somebody doesn't want people knowing how to build these things, and when you look at this video by someone who did the work and testing, you'll see why. Appears they work pretty dang good to me.

The author of this book detailed the torture testing that was done with a .223 model. Four mags through an M-4 type rifle, full auto as fast as the clips could be changed. Burned the black coating completely away, but other than needing re-coated, zero damage.

If a seam in an outer tube did split, and one never has on one of these, you know what would happen? A crack would develop. Some noise would escape. You'd have to weld it back up or at worst make a new one. And in building over a hundred of these in the course of R&D, not a single one ever "blew up" on the author while firing, shooting the holes through the baffles, or at any other time. Special care IS required when working with semi-auto pistols however, and that is detailed.

Couple other things. The galvanizing on the parts involved is much too thin to significantly interfere with the welding. Galvanizing can be removed if you prefer, but welds are perfectly solid either way as long as you can get the hang of welding, and the book provides basic welding instruction too. The softness of the freeze plug baffles is only a problem for the very first one, in rifle calibers only, and even then only if you don't make a solid blast baffle as instructed. And in fact this softness is necessary for forming the baffle to the desired gas-redirecting shape, which is the reason they are used instead of the old method of fender washers.

This book isn't for people with a fancy machine shop, it's for people who have a welder (even a cheap 110v model), but no lathe, milling equipment, or reloading equipment. While there are more advanced baffle designs that can be made in a fancy shop, this type of design is still in use commercially, and it is made much more effective by use of heavy stainless diffuser material between the baffles, something commercial cans don't use because it affects longevity. (But when you can rebuild the thing for $20, who cares?) It is the best suppressor you can make with these construction methods, and whether the previous reviewer likes it or not, these suppressors are very comparable in performance to commercial models.

I wouldn't go quite so far as to put one of these on an M60 or an M249 without stronger seamless tube, (available from Aircraft Spruce), but many commercial cans are not rated for those weapons either. For an M-4 or M-14 on duty however, or a sniper rifle in .338 or .50 BMG, these will do the same job as the commercial models and just as safely, and they can be constructed on-site by military units, security contractors, or others that don't have funds for commercial cans.

If "NFA Manufacturer" can build one of these suppressors properly and then make it blow up, perhaps he'd like to post the video for us instead of running his mouth off about what he just knows will happen. (If you do, Mr. NFA, just make sure to show the number of continuous rounds it took to break it, and without fixing it to break first. I'd love to see that myself.) In the meantime readers, get this book before Uncle Sam finds a way to make sure you can't!

P.S. The reason the book doesn't discuss the effect on bullet velocity is because there is no effect. The bullet does not touch any rubber wipes and is therefore not slowed down nor accuracy harmed as a result.

Pros:
It gives you kind of a history of a few names, old names that are coming back into style, doesn't give you "baby name overload" because it's all pretty narrowed down, etc

Cons:
Not enough names

We are currently expecting our 2nd baby and are not finding out the sex so we need to find names for both a boy and a girl just in case. I bought this name almanac because it's crunch time and although it's nice to not have to read a million and one names in each alphabet category, I felt there wasn't enough.

Save your time and money!

I was very disappointed with this book. First of all, despite its title it was last updated in early 2015, so it didn't even have any 2015 name charts. The list of boy names in the book is ridiculous. There also include about 40 to 50 German names. I am German and can assure that no more then 10 of these suggested names are actually first names. Of those ten, 50% have not been used since medievel times. A lot of names I would have expected were not in there. So if you are looking for an extremely rare name, this is your book. Otherwise, save your time and money.

The first 70 pages are filled with facts and history about names and celebrity names. Disappointed in the variety and number of the actual names provided. Kind of focused on trendy and current names, not a well-rounded selection. However, I liked that the origins and meanings are provided.

The great skeptic and prose stylist H.L. Mencken had a lifelong habit of keeping notebooks that he'd plumb for ideas. He eventually collected many brief essays from his notebooks and published them as Minority Report, claiming in the book's introduction that the pieces had been selected at random. That may be true, but as Mencken's writing discipline seemed to require him to always produce elegant prose, it's fair to say that his random notebook entries are superior to the polished essays of many other writers. Mencken was simply a national treasure, and Minority Report, as it contains a great many of his observations on a wide variety of subjects, is a good place to begin to get a taste of his eccentrically intelligent style.

Excellent HLM, Just A Bit Mean Here & There!

This selection of HLM aphorisms appeared in his later years at the age of 68, just before his health seriously deteriorated. Basically a book of about 432 short witticisms, much like A. Bierce's DEVIL'S DICTIONARY, but with a bit too much bile a times. Obviously, he enjoys jabbing at the powerful ("Roosevelt II", among others), the New Deal, Lawyers, Politicians, Professors, just about everyone, or, all the hippocrites, idiots,morons,(standard words in the HLM lexicon) out there. Politically he seems to subscribe to the hard Victorian "Sink or Swim" philosophy, and constantly cracks those who cannot pull their own weight. Democracy? A sham for losers and loafers. Elections? Only those who have supported themselves for 5 years need apply. Mississippians and Tenneseeans? Mainly dim wits and holy rollers of inferior stock. Some of these comments get repetitive, and more than a little tasteless. But,still, at his best, he is incomparable, especially in critiqueing organized (mainly Christian) religion. In his view a total sham, completely irrational and unscientific. In fact, the world would be vastly improved if everyone took a few moments to consider his irreverent, but totally honest, religion comments.Wars? Completely without morals and really a suckers game run by incompetents with no knowledge of the horrors being unleached. So today HLM would be a far right libertarian, but would shoot his poisonous darts to all the war mongerers and phoney flag wavers. So where is today's HLM? There are a few who try, but none who can come close!

The Little World of Don Camillo; The enchanting adventures of a little Parish Priest

In the tiny Po River Valley in an obscure village in Italy a good-hearted village Priest, Don Camillo, struggles to tend his flock, stay true to God and goodness, while struggling with his personal and very human Italian-temper. Don Camillo's buttons are often pushed by his arch-rival the Village Mayor, an avowed leader of the Communist Party, who is also struggling to do his best to tend to the villagers and maintain his own Italian temper. Set in the conflict of the days between the World Wars, the men are artful and worthy adversaries who often & hysterically get the best of each other by turns, and occasionally ignore their differences so they can work together to do their best for their community. Not dissimilar to what is going on over in another country far far away today. If you have any Italian blood in you, or you have loved anyone or anything Italian, you will find this a joy. And, it is a series! In 1953 they made three of the series into wonderful movies you will certainly enjoy.

What POD shouldn't be

This is a very poorly executed print-on-demand book that is difficult to read because of the really bad typesetting. The illustrations are unreadable, having been scanned at very low resolution. Buy a used copy of Don Camillo and His Flock (same book plus another chapter or two) and you will be much happier.

Lupe Rivera and Marie-Pierre Colle bring Frida and the Blue House in Coyoacan vividly to life. We learn of parakeets chattering in their cages, of the monkey Fulang Chang, of people congregating in the famous tiled kitchen. But most of all, we learn about Frida and how she welcomed people into her home. Frida was an enthusiast, and every occasion was cause for rejoicing. She celebrated birthdays and saints days and baptisms and all the popular holidays. The authors have divided the book into a cycle of twelve fiestas, among them the Posadas (at Christmas), the Day of the Dead, the Mexican national holidays, and a gala celebration called "The Meal of the Broad Tablecloths". Included with the reminiscences are more than 100 recipes for the traditional Mexican foods that Diego loved to eat and Frida loved to prepare.

Guadalupe Rivera is an authority on preColombian culture and daughter to Latin America's most celebrated and controversial painter, Diego Rivera.

Urquiza is one of Mexico's leading photographers.

Marie-Pierre colle is the author or co-author of several books, including Frida's Fiestas: Recipes and Reminiscences of Life with Frida Kahlo and Mexico: Houses of the Pacific. Of Mexican-French heritage, she began her career as a journalist in New York and has worked for such magazines as Vogue, House & Garden, and Conde Nast Traveler. She currently resides in Mexico.
Alfonso Alfaro is the director of the Institute of Investigation of Artes de Mexico. A doctor of anthropology at the Sorbonne, he is the author or coauthor of several books published in Mexico.

Beautiful and Tasty Addition to my Frida Kahlo Library

I'm a huge Frida Kahlo fan, and this is much more than a mere recipe book. While Hayden Herrera's biography gave us the flavor of Frida's life, Frida's Fiestas gives us the flavor of her kitchen, bringing those of us who wish to know more about the artist and the woman just a little bit closer to sharing and understanding her life. Frida celebrated life to it's fullest; her favorite recipes and the artistic way they are presented on the pages of this book are a celebration as well. Viva la Vida!

Exquisite, fabulous...a true aphrodisiac!

Adding a culinary aspect of Frida's life was an incredible idea! Lupe Marin does an excellent job in sharing the secrets of popular Mexican food and how they influenced the art and persona of Frida Kahlo. This book definitely opens the senses to sensual recipies you could share with friends and significant others!

So far, SO good!

Received this book as a gift. The recipes look great and I tried the first one today: baked chilaquiles with green tomatillo sauce. Wow, what a winner!

Just the sauce alone way exceeded expectations (I plan to use it separately as a dip, enchilada sauce, on a fresh hot corn tortilla or even as salad dressing -- it was delicious).

The dish came together easily and was just awesome. I halved it and it was fine.

General note about the recipes in this book: if you need really exact directions, it may not be for you. A recipe might say 'put a little bit of sauce in the bottom of the pan.' How much is 'a little bit' of sauce? You need to be comfortable with a certain amount of vagueness in your recipes. It's manageable or even preferable if you're pretty comfortable in the kitchen, but if you require precision in your recipe instruction, this may not be the book for you.

Enjoyed the stories and pics. It's a lovely book, especially if you admire Frida. Thumbs up.
