A close look at Undocumented Dominican Migration

"Undocumented Dominican Migration" is an extraordinary book on illegal Dominican migration to Puerto Rico and to the US mainland. This book, well written and well documented, has been accomplished under intense scientific approach. Touched by the great devotion and humanism of its author, American Professor Frank Graziano, the book is the product of several years of research in which Graziano compiled everything written on Dominican migration and made repeated trips to interview in person many migrants in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and, the United States mainland. From all three countries, he also interviewed coastal and migration authorities and visited prisons and contacted prosecutors that had information on the issue at hand. Now armed with large amounts of data, information, and with the precision of his academic integrity and his great social sensitivity, Graziano proceeded to examine closely the undocumented Dominican migration via yola, resulting in his priceless work.
In this book, the author presents undocumented Dominican migration with a depth never seen before. He explores the geographic, economic, political and cultural aspects of it without neglecting the great human drama of the migrants themselves who, in his book, convey directly their own stories before they get touched by the cold statistics and sociological interpretations. Without ceasing to be an eminently academic work, "Dominican Undocumented Migration" is also a very entertaining book that is easily read and understood. With a great realism, this book takes us to the lives of poor Dominican migrants and their environment of hope, despair and misery.
With this book, Frank Graziano has made an incalculable contribution to give a deeper insight into the issue of the Dominican Republic undocumented migration. The result of his hard work must be received by the governments of the countries involved with the high valuation it deserves. Graziano's book is worthy of being a required reading in the classrooms of the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico as well as a reference book for journalists, historians and sociologists. For Dominican governments, this book should serve as a motivation for them to finally take actions to make emigration of Dominican citizens a matter of choice, and not what it is today: an escape hatch through which Dominicans risk their lives to uncertainty, trying to flee from economic and social problems that seem to perpetuate themselves under the shadow of ineptitude, corruption, and impunity.

Frank Graziano is a scholar of religion, not a social scientist, but a visit to the Dominican Republic lured him into the subject of Dominican yola (boat) migration. He searched out passengers and smugglers who would tell him their story—mainly, the ones who have repeatedly failed. Then he interviewed the Dominican Navy, the U.S. Coast Guard and Border Patrol, and he also took simple but powerful black-and-white portraits of the migrants. The result is not just informative but profoundly moving.

Most yola passengers are drawn from the Dominican poor, a peasant population squeezed off the land by agribusiness and population growth. They are now totally dependent on cash income in a stagnant economy that cannot employ them in the formal sector.

Graziano is amazed by the bravery required to step into a small boat to cross a treacherous strait in which hundreds, perhaps thousands, of migrants have drowned. But most Dominicans are so unfamiliar with the sea, and he sees so many signs of carelessness, that he suspects that rational calculation is actually minimal, and that they take to the sea with the kind of emotional decision-making with which young men volunteer for a war and then expect to step into a war movie.

Many of the boats with which Dominicans attempt to cross the Mona Passage to Puerto Rico are not very functional in terms of nautical design, nor are the smugglers very reliable, which leads some migrants to place their faith in relatives who have even less idea of what they’re doing.

According to Graziano, many Dominican wannabes fail to grasp the existence of a large underclass in the U.S., with the result that they are most likely to end up working in the informal sector for Puerto Ricans. Whether they get no farther than the next island or make it to the U.S. mainland, especially the New York metropolitan area, the Dominicans are part of bumper-ball migration stretching from Haiti to the northeastern United States.

I am fascinated by how the experience of the Dominicans parallels that of the many Guatemalans I interviewed for El Norte or Bust! The boat trips themselves cost only a fraction of what coyotes charge Guatemalans for the overland journey through Mexico to a US safe house, but the rate of failure seems to be much higher. Graziano believes that 70-80% of yolas are interdicted and the percentage of men who send back remittances seems to be much lower than in the case of Guatemalans. In a neighborhood surveyed by other investigators, 77% of the households had family members in the US but only 26% were receiving remittances. From his many interviews Graziano concludes that migration continues even after the sought-after labor market in Puerto Rico or the U.S. mainland is saturated, with the result that migrants cannot pay back the high cost of the trip and lose everything—“without Puerto Rico, without a farm, and without a house” in the words of Dominican observer.

When people feel they need to take to the sea in small boats to realize their dreams, there is something very wrong with the society that induces those dreams.

In addition to the structural factors that are commonly treated in sociological studies, this book treats the personal (frustration, love, ambition) and cultural factors that contribute to migration. The analyses of Coast Guard operations and US Attorney prosecutions are fascinating and enlightening, as are the discussions of border enforcement and US immigration policy generally. Another strength of the book is its empathy, for migrants but also for the Coast Guard, without romanticizing or apologizing for anyone. This study is a major accomplishment and will likely become the definitive work in the field.

I meant to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon reading a mystery novel, but I read the first chapter of "How Did You Get Here?" and couldn't put it down. The voices of the students, including co-author Laura Schifter, describe their lives in clear, engaging prose. At the end I had not only been introduced to some fascinating people, I also understood a bit about what role policy-making has in 21st century American lives. Read this book.

I took this book with me to read on the plane on my way to a Florida resort vacation. It was so engaging that I continued to read poolside - couldn't stop until I finished. This book is a must read for all educators K-12, teachers and administrators. Thank you Dr. Hehir for sharing these stories. It's not often that we hear the student perspective regarding special education services, supports and accommodations.

I had been using my OMD-EM5 for a half a year before this book became available. I was really looking forward to it, hoping that it will help me understand better and use more optimally this fantastic camera. The book failed my expectations completely.

Basically, this book amounts to a re-written instruction manual. Yes, it is in a bigger print than the Olympus manual and admittedly somewhat clearer. But there is nothing more than this. The remainder of the book is very generic information that seems like recycled from the author's books on other cameras (just with "OM-D" globally inserted in the spots marked with "[INSERT CAMERA NAME HERE]"). I was hoping to get more expert insights on the use of this particular camera, advice on advanced options, interpretations - such as rationale why and when to choose specific parameters for certain less obvious settings. I had anticipated expert recommendations on different ways to expand the system, e.g., pros and cons of using legacy lenses with this particular camera, hints on useful customization setups (like the Guide to OMD-EM5 on DPReview provides), etc. Nothing like that - the book is painfully neutral, i.e., washed out of opinions (except for a recommendation of a ridiculously priced camera strap that reads like a paid advertisement). There are also factual errors - several times the book mentions a "built in flash" (looks like a poor copy editing of the generic template for a book on any camera). Overall, I do not recommend that book. Much more valuable information can be found on the web (e.g., Guide to OMD-EM5 on DPReview).

A Helpful Replacement and Suppliment for the OMD User Manual

I bought this book at the same time I purchased Olympus OM-D E-M5 camera. The book is helpful and well illustrated with large very easy to view diagrams, images and illustrations. The text is easy to read and understand and has helped me into using this very complex camera. The book itself is four times larger than the OEM manual, is as heavy as the camera, at 1 8 lbs and is beautifully printed on heavy weight glossy stock. My book seems well bound and no pages have come loose as some people reported. This binding looks very sturdy and should hold up as well as my other well bound books.

Some reviewers have stated that this book is no better than the Olympus manual. Not true! The supplied Olympus printed user manual is almost impossible to read, with very small print, no detail, and just enough to get you started. The full user manual is on the Olympus setup disk but I won't really need to spend much time reading it because of this book. The full user manual will be a handy reference when placed on my Tablet for travel. The book itself is probably too heavy to travel with but that's why the full user manuals are on disk. It would be nice if Olympus did make a small full user manual for the camera bag but few companies do that anymore.

The very best place to get started for your first settings on the camera is to read the wonderful Dpreview article on how to setup the camera for optimum first use. It's several pages long but will save you hours of trying to figure out the best settings see [...] This book itself explains settings but does not necessarily recommend the most useful settings that the dpreview article shows how to to get in just a few pages. It's most useful for a great start and even makes this book more understandable and useful.

The Olympus OMD camera is my first Olympus model and it is quite a shock to adjust to the many differences in menus compared to the Canon and Panasonic lineup. I haven't read a lot of the book yet, but most users will only need to read the sections that will be helpful to them along with the full user manual on the Setup disk.

If you are contemplating purchasing the Olympus OM-D E-M5 or have already purchased one, this book will help you get the most from your camera. If you are not sure you want to buy the camera, this book could help you decide and be a great help once you do decide to purchase it. BTW: I think the camera is quite special especially if you are a professional or an advanced amateur. It will be a challenge for the enthusiast but not impossible. The camera will frustrate the novice photographer. However the camera is well worth the time and investment. I was disappointed that the kindle version of this book was so expensive and much more than the printed version. I don't understand that but if it was available at a reasonable price, i would have preferred the kindle version for the portability.

Update: I was very pleased to discover that if you purchase the book from Amazon you are eligible to buy the Kindle version at a later time for the reduced price of $2.99 instead of the regular kindle retail. I really enjoy the kindle versions since I can carry around both the PDF manual and this very helpful book for addition explanation. I think the kindle HDX is perfect for both PDF books and the Kindle book. The Kindle version works well on all Kindles and on your computer.

David Busch OMD E-5 User Guide

Unfortunately this book leaves a lot to be desired for the price paid. Just a wee bit more informative than the user guide which I had to print off the Internet when I first bought the camera a year ago. Save your money, print the user guide off the internet and you will get about the same results. Very disappointed in the book, however highly pleased with the camera and with the Panasonic 12-35 f2.8 lens purchased to accompany it. Again, buy the Camera, buy the lens, forget the book.
