I am Haunted: Living Life Through the Dead, by Zak Bagans, Kelly Crigger

Paranormal investigator Zak Bagans has traveled all over the world, seeking answers to life’s deepest and most terrifying mysteries. What happens when we die? Why do some spirits move on while others remain stuck in some sort of in-between place? What do the spirits really want from us? Zak has dedicated his life to finding out the truth.

He has bought a demon house in Indiana that has been described as a “portal to hell,” summoned the devil at the Hellfire Club in Ireland, and been attacked by a possessed doll in Mexico. But sometimes it’s his interactions with the living that rattle him the most, from innocent people harboring evil spirits to crazed fans to the victims of violent spirit attacks.

Through his investigations of the world’s most haunted places, Zak has learned far more about the living and the dead than anyone should. He’s been to the edge of death and back and come away with a spiritual key that unlocks doors to another world that few have ever seen.

Come along for the ride.

About the Author
Zak Bagans never believed in ghosts until he came face to face with one during a terrifying incident in a Michigan apartment. Not the passive type, Zak set out to learn more about the paranormal. In 2004 he produced an award-winning documentary film that changed his life and the lives of many others when he captured one of the most shocking pieces of paranormal evidence ever. Now the host of two top-rated paranormal television shows, Bagans has conducted hundreds of investigations into the unknown, becoming intimately familiar with the places ordinary people will not go. Kelly Crigger is not a paranormal investigator, but has been intrigued by the paranormal for many years and has conducted several investigations alongside Zak. He is the author of four books, including Dark World, and over two hundred internet and print articles. Crigger retired from the US Army in 2011 after 24 years in uniform.

Rambling, unorganized, and self-indulgent. Watch him on T.V. instead.
By KJAL
As a frequent purchaser of e-books in this category, I’ve learned to alter my expectations based on price. Authors who price their books at $1.99 (or even $.99) often have an excellent story to tell, but seldom have the assistance of a traditional publisher or professional editor. I’ve learned to cut these authors some slack since they are riding the publishing trapeze without a net of underlying services (and am often pleasantly surprised with the level of quality they’re able to put out).

When I pay much more than that, however, as I did with this book, my expectations go up accordingly. Because Zak utilized both a publisher (who also produced a hardcover version of the book) and an experienced co-author, I bought with confidence that this book would be professionally done. Unfortunately, what I’ve found is a hot mess of poor editorial choices and a near complete lack of organization.

Chapter one, for example, reads like the sort of off-the-cuff soliloquy spoken into a tape recorder while driving in city traffic—and maybe it was. It moves randomly from veiled criticisms of competing shows to complaints about the shallowness of celebrity culture to spiritualist philosophy and back again. If co-author Crigger was doing anything more than transcribing, it isn’t reflected in the resulting chapter. Someone needed to parse this raw material into a framework that provides some flow and transition. A co-author’s job should have been to suggest something like: Part I: Common investigative methods, their flaws & pitfalls. Part II: What we do differently, how we do it better and have improved over time; Part III: The deep spiritual impact this work has brought to my life; Part IV?: Celebrity culture? Just leave out any mentions of the Biebs, Madonna, and the Kardashians—it just dates your material and makes you look petty. Where was Crigger in this? Either he failed to make these basic suggestions, or Zak’s ego was too big to accept good advice. We may never know why, but Chapter one’s extended rambling creates a very poor first impression for the book.

Chapter two was better—almost. This is where Zak pays tribute to his co-workers on his show. It was great to hear his personal insights and his appreciation for those who have contributed so much to the show’s success. The only problem? The glaring omission of one of the three main investigators: Nick Groff. Did I miss a section about Nick? I paged back through the chapter. No, nothing there. I paged back further to the credits at the beginning. Even Zak’s dog is acknowledged, but no mention of his co-investigator Nick. I can think of any number of reasons for Nick's absence—maybe he asked to be left out for privacy reasons, maybe there is behind-the-scenes conflict that we don’t know about, maybe Nick’s publisher insisted he be left out. But nothing is explained—fans are simply left wondering what they missed.

Chapter three starts out strong with new material about an infested house that Zak bought—material that we haven’t seen from the show. Unfortunately, it stops abruptly with a come-on to check back for Zak’s documentary.

And on it goes.

I still love Zak’s show and respect Zak himself, but this book feels like it was rushed out the door with little work invested—it reads like an attempt to monetize popularity rather than provide any value to his fans and readers. My advice: Watch the show, but think carefully before buying this book.

Lacking a little/a lot.
By Kat
I needed a book to fill some time and thought this was going to be an interesting trip into Zak's head. It was a trip into his head but it wasn't particularly deep and not particularly interesting. I guess I feel that there's more going on with this guy but he's still kind of just skimming the surface. The book was basically a collection of oral essays that he had transcribed. I'm all about the stream of consciousness sort of thing if it leads somewhere but this didn't lead anywhere really.

And if he wasn't ready to "go there" in this book and I mean really sincerely go there instead of just skimming the surface then at least it could have interesting stories about the haunted places or something but the book was lacking in that too.

Poor writing undermines some interesting ideas
By Braden Pickering
Before I get too critical here, just let me say that in spite of his sometimes corny “cool dude” image, I do believe that Zak Bagans truly is an intellectual at heart and his passion for the paranormal is to be taken seriously. As a researcher, author, and clairvoyant myself I applaud him for bringing such topics to light and injecting then into an accessible mainstream dialogue. I enjoyed his first book, the thoughtfully written “Dark World,” but wouldn’t be entirely honest if I said I liked this one nearly as much.

For starters, the writing style just feels off in a way I can’t quite put my finger on. He’s a smart guy, as evidenced by some of his prior work, but the writing here is so simplistic in nature it’s as if he were making a point to pander to those with a 3rd grade intellect. “I went upstairs. There were shadows. It was scary.” I don’t want to sound condescending by putting it that way, but the entire book is presented in such a fashion and it’s frustrating to watch people dumb themselves down when you know they’re capable of so much more. (In fact, because of that, I’m tempted to question how much of this book Bagans himself actually had a hand in.) He also takes every opportunity he can to pat himself on the back by reminding us how creative he is and how much more experience he has under his belt compared to most other paranormal investigators. Practically every other paragraph begins with “As an empath…” and that gets tiresome real quick, especially since he never fully explores exactly what that means for him. I don’t fault him for coming off as a tad douchey, mind you, because he HAS accomplished a lot and lord knows I can toot my own horn when I want to as well. But again, it only serves to further highlight just how poor and repetitive the actual writing is.

On the plus side, if you read his last book, which was very philosophical, you might be glad to know that Bagans opens up a bit more about himself and delves into more personal territory this time around. He touches on subjects such as his plastic surgery, ex-girlfriends, fame, and shares a handful of anecdotes about crazy fans and why he likes to shy away from the limelight as much as possible when he isn’t working. I found the chapter about the airplane bathroom mishap particularly amusing because not only was it hilarious anyway, but it was one of the few instances where it felt like his true personality was finally breaking through the walls he spent the previous 200 pages building up around it.

Anyway, those are just my thoughts so take them as you will. Zak seems like a tough guy to get to know, and this book certainly did him no favors in that respect. Though I have criticized the writing style I can’t help but feel perhaps it’s an intentional method of keeping the reader at arm’s length, but then I suppose I would have to wonder why he’d want to publish another book at all if that were the case. It’s hard to say. In any event, if you’re a more casual fan of Bagans or the Ghost Adventures TV show I would cautiously recommend “I am Haunted” as an easy way to kill a weekend, but if you’re more research-minded and are looking for a resource to return to again and again, just stick with “Dark World.”
