A real review of Patternmaking in Practice
By Concerned about our kids
I've been in contact with the author, and I've made the basic skirt blocks and bodice blocks using this book, so my review is more than just opinion. :)

I recommend the book overall for the following reasons:

Primarily, Ms. Lucia uses the German pattern drafting style and the metric system, which I believe is one of the best pattern making styles available, and why I chose to use her text. I also have her previous book. This new edition contains slightly better instructions (translation issues continue, however) and more information for the beginning pattern maker.

My background: I've sewn for about 30 years, but have never made my own patterns. This text is very inexpensive compared to others on the market.

The author is a great lady who is very helpful. She's currently in Berlin going to school, and she explained to me that she's had a lot of trouble with the translators putting her books into English, and it shows. The translation problems probably explain the majority of issues with the book and her earlier volume.

The following are the problems I've ran into using the text.

1. EASE: I've successfully made a very well-fitted skirt for my daughter using the author's directions. However, it took 3 attempts to do so. First attempt using the book's 1 cm ease allowance for the skirt produced a second skin that my girl would never have been able to sit down in. I found that you need about 2.5 cm minimum of ease in the skirt half to get a decent fit. (So, if your waist is 100 cm in circum, half would be 50, plus at least 2.5 cm for a total of 52.5 across widest pt to make the CF and CB skirt blocks.)

The bodice came out nearly perfect the first time to my relief ;). And the German method of making sleeves gives you full range of motion, so I expect that to turn out fine, as well.

NOTE: I'm using my "second skins" to make a dress form cover for my daughter over my current dressform. All I need to add is the batting wrap under it and I have a pretty accurate form for her. I'll just make a tighter version of the bodice and I'll be in business!

2. DARTS PLACEMENT: I found that the darts on the skirt ended up too close to the side seam. To fix, I drew the curved side seam FIRST with my hip curve *before* I measured 8 cm to the left for dart A, and to the middle btwn the curved side seam and the folded edge for dart D (and curved side seam to dart D for dart C). The book just says side seam and implies the initial, vertical/straight side seam before using your hip curve, and this could be an error with the translators. ??

The dart sizes and lengths for both skirt and bodice were just fine in the text.

3. MEASUREMENT CHART: The BAW in the chart is for only half of the width of the back, not the entire width. This should be noted in the text. The author also explained that there was a translation problem concerning the difference btwn hip depth and individual hip depth. The individual hip depth is simply from the waist down to the hip line, about 19-22 cm, but the hip depth on the chart represents the measurement from the neck vertebrae to the hip line down the middle of the back.

4. BODICE CONSTRUCTION: Make sure you study and ADJUST the initial measurements she provides in her 12/14 example in the beginning TO PREPARE FOR YOUR BODICE. There were just 2 errors I found making the bodice--in the example and instructs on page 67: 1/2 WAC + 2 cm and 1/2 HC + 1.5 cm should be changed to 1/4 WAC + 2 cm and 1/4 HC + 1.5 cm, respectively.

I hope this helps someone else. Aside from the translation issues and a few missing explanations, it's an excellent book since it covers basic draping techniques of skirt and bodice as well as creating blocks, also, tips on sewing and construction, alterations, etc. I wish I could have given it 5 stars, but I believe she needs a new translator and a better editor to catch the mistakes. She said she was limited to 120 pages and would have like to have covered more, like making pants. Maybe in her next book??

I've got one of her other books and found I had to refer back to it for an explanation of a symbol used. She uses the % sign not as a percent but to indicate minus, or subtraction as AD (armhole diameter) is 1/6 of BC (bust circumference) % (minus) 2.5 cm. No place in the text in this book is that explained. It was, however, in the other book I have. The two books are similar but not alike. This is not a beginner book but for someone with some experience.
